Convert MAX to SKP
Convert a 3ds Max scene for editing and delivery in SketchUp.
How to convert max to skp file

SketchUp users need this conversion when a model was created in 3ds Max but must be edited, measured, or delivered as a SketchUp project. Because SketchUp does not normally open native MAX scenes, the reliable workflow is to export an interchange format from 3ds Max and import it into SketchUp.
What MAX contains
.max is Autodesk 3ds Max’s native scene format, used by 3D artists, animators, visual-effects teams, game developers, and architectural-visualization studios. A scene can contain meshes, modifiers, lights, cameras, materials, animation data, render settings, and references to external textures or linked files.
MAX is version-dependent: newer 3ds Max releases generally open files from older releases, while older releases cannot reliably open files saved by newer ones. Plug-in objects and third-party renderer data may also require the original plug-ins and renderer. SketchUp and general-purpose online converters do not normally read those scene features directly.
What SKP contains
.skp is SketchUp’s native project format. It stores SketchUp geometry, groups, components, materials, scenes, styles, and model metadata, making it suitable for architectural, interior, product, and construction models that must be edited or documented in SketchUp.
SKP is not a replacement for the original 3ds Max scene. It does not preserve most MAX-specific modifiers, rigs, animation systems, particle effects, renderer materials, procedural maps, or lighting setups. The target file is normally a static, geometry-focused model.
Convert with 3ds Max and SketchUp Pro
The most direct desktop route is 3ds Max → 3DS → SketchUp Pro. The 3DS format is old, but SketchUp desktop commonly imports it more directly than MAX or FBX.
- Open the scene in the same 3ds Max release or a newer compatible release. Install required plug-ins and relink missing assets before exporting.
- Check both display and system units under Customize → Units Setup and Customize → System Unit Setup. Changing only the display units does not rescale existing geometry; verify a known dimension before export.
- Hide or delete cameras, lights, animation controllers, render-only objects, and construction geometry that should not enter SketchUp. Collapse or apply modifiers when the generated mesh is the required output.
- Select the required objects, or export the whole scene through File → Export → Export Selected or File → Export → Export.
- Choose
3D Studio (*.3ds). Enable geometry, materials, and texture-coordinate options when offered. The legacy 3DS format uses 16-bit mesh counts, so split very large objects if the exporter reports vertex or face-limit errors. - Keep the exported
.3dsfile with its texture folder. Use short, simple filenames and avoid moving the textures before import. - In the desktop edition of SketchUp Pro, select File → Import, choose
3DS Files (*.3ds), set the correct import units, and enable material or texture-coordinate options if available. - Inspect scale, face orientation, smoothing, materials, missing textures, and object placement. Group related geometry and convert repeated items into components where appropriate, then use File → Save As to create the
.skpfile.
SketchUp for Web does not provide the same 3DS import workflow as SketchUp Pro for desktop. If 3DS import is unavailable in the installed edition, export OBJ, FBX, or DAE from 3ds Max and pass it through a desktop conversion utility that can produce a format supported by the SketchUp installation. Blender and MeshLab can handle several interchange formats, but their exact import and export support depends on the version; neither normally opens MAX directly.
Online conversion options
There is no consistently reliable, reputable online service for direct MAX-to-SKP conversion. Services that claim MAX support may need a licensed 3ds Max installation on their server, reject scenes containing plug-in objects, or discard materials and external references. Online services also commonly lack SKP output or support only older SketchUp versions.
If confidentiality is not a concern, an online converter can sometimes process an already exported OBJ, DAE, or 3DS file, but confirm that it explicitly supports the input and output formats before uploading. Do not submit proprietary scenes, linked assets, or client data without checking the service’s retention and deletion policy. For production work, exporting locally from 3ds Max and importing locally into SketchUp is safer.
Quality and compatibility limits
Standard bitmap textures have the best chance of surviving, but absolute paths, unsupported image formats, procedural maps, UV changes, and missing texture folders can produce untextured surfaces. Reassign materials and relink images after import.
Triangulation, normals, smoothing groups, pivots, hierarchy, and object names can change during 3DS export. Curved or hard-surface models should be inspected for flipped faces, visible seams, and unwanted diagonal edges. High polygon counts can make SketchUp slow; export only the geometry required for the deliverable and reduce dense subdivision meshes where possible.
Keep the original .max file, plug-ins, textures, and export settings. The resulting .skp file is not a round-trip copy, and SketchUp cannot save the converted model back into a native MAX scene.
