SketchUp requires an SKP model, but Blender saves scenes in its native BLEND format. Converting is useful when a Blender asset must be opened, edited, or shared in SketchUp rather than Blender.

What the BLEND format is

BLEND is Blender’s native project format, created by Blender and used for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, simulations, materials, cameras, lights, and scene organization. A BLEND file can contain meshes, modifiers, armatures, shape keys, procedural materials, particle systems, Geometry Nodes, and links to external image textures or other Blender data.

Because BLEND stores Blender-specific scene data, other 3D applications generally cannot open it directly. Blender must export the model through an interchange format before SketchUp can import it.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp’s native 3D model format. It is used for architectural models, interior layouts, construction documentation, site planning, product concepts, and components in the SketchUp ecosystem.

SKP preserves SketchUp entities such as groups, components, faces, edges, materials, scenes, and model units. It is well suited to editing geometry in SketchUp, but it is not designed to preserve Blender animation, rigging, simulations, or every Blender material feature.

How to convert BLEND to SKP

Using Blender and SketchUp

  1. Open the source file, such as model.blend, in Blender and remove cameras, lights, hidden objects, and construction geometry that should not be transferred.
  2. Check the model’s scale and orientation. Apply object transforms with Object → Apply → Rotation & Scale when the exported geometry must retain its current dimensions and alignment.
  3. Convert or apply Blender features that an interchange format cannot represent reliably. Apply required modifiers, convert curves and text to meshes, and confirm that Geometry Nodes output is realized as ordinary mesh geometry.
  4. Export the visible model through File → Export → Collada (.dae). Enable Selection Only if only selected objects should be transferred, and enable texture export or texture copying when that option is available. Save the result as model.dae.
  5. In SketchUp, choose File → Import, select the Collada file type, and open model.dae. In the import options, use the correct unit system and enable material or texture import if offered.
  6. Inspect the imported geometry, correct its scale, organize it into groups or components, and repair faces whose front and back sides are reversed.
  7. Save the result with File → Save As as model.skp. Choose a SketchUp version compatible with the people or applications that will open the file.

Collada is usually the most practical bridge because Blender can export it and SketchUp can import it. If the installed SketchUp edition or version does not provide Collada import, an OBJ or FBX intermediate may be possible, but support and material handling vary by SketchUp version and installed extensions.

Using the online converter

You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the BLEND file, choose SKP as the output format when available, run the conversion, and download the generated SketchUp file. Check the output in SketchUp before relying on it for production work, especially if the BLEND file uses external textures or complex Blender-only features.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • Materials: Simple colors and image textures may transfer, but Blender node materials, procedural textures, metallic workflows, emission effects, and shader mixing usually need to be rebuilt in SketchUp.
  • Textures: Keep image files available during export and import. Missing or unsupported texture paths can produce untextured faces; use common formats such as PNG or JPEG and relink them in SketchUp if necessary.
  • Geometry: SketchUp uses planar faces and edges, so dense meshes, non-manifold geometry, tiny triangles, and high subdivision levels can import slowly or create editing problems. Apply subdivision only to the level required for the intended model.
  • Animation and rigs: Blender timelines, armatures, keyframes, simulations, particle systems, cameras, and lights do not become equivalent animated SketchUp features through a normal Collada import.
  • Orientation and units: Verify axis conversion and unit settings after import. A model can appear rotated or incorrectly sized even when the mesh itself exported correctly.
  • SketchUp version: Newer SKP files may not open in older SketchUp releases. Save to the oldest required version when the application offers that option.
