How to convert RFA to SKP

There is no direct, reliable one-click RFA to SKP converter that preserves full parametric intelligence. In most cases, the best workflow is to export the family geometry to an intermediate format and then import it into SketchUp.

  1. Open the RFA in Autodesk Revit.
    Use File → Open and select the family file.
  2. Load the family into a project if needed.
    Some export options are easier from a project environment than from the family editor.
  3. Export to a SketchUp-friendly intermediate format.
    The most practical options are DWG, DXF, or IFC, depending on your workflow and available tools. In Revit, use File → Export and choose the format that best matches your SketchUp import options. If you need a mesh-based workflow, a dedicated converter may also export to OBJ or another 3D format.
  4. Import into SketchUp.
    In SketchUp, use File → Import and select the exported file. If you exported to DWG or DXF, make sure your SketchUp edition supports that import workflow. SketchUp Pro includes DWG/DXF import support; the free web version has more limited import options.
  5. Save as SKP.
    After import and cleanup, use File → Save As to save the model as .skp.

Important: this process converts the family to static geometry. It does not preserve Revit family parameters, formulas, constraints, or nested family intelligence.

Best desktop software options

Autodesk Revit is the primary tool for opening and exporting the RFA. SketchUp Pro is the best choice for importing CAD/BIM geometry and saving the result as SKP. For more complex models, a dedicated intermediary such as Autodesk Navisworks, 3ds Max, or a BIM/CAD conversion tool may help depending on the family complexity and the level of detail you need.

Revit importer for SketchUp Studio

If you have SketchUp Studio on Windows, the Revit Importer can import RVT files directly into SketchUp. This is useful for project-level Revit data, but it is not a direct RFA-to-SKP converter. If your source is an RFA family, you still need to place or export it from Revit first.

Note: Revit Importer is available only on Windows and requires a SketchUp Studio subscription. Availability and supported Revit versions can change, so check the current Trimble documentation before relying on it for production work.

Plugins and conversion tools

Some third-party tools can simplify Revit-to-SketchUp workflows, especially when you need better control over geometry, materials, or file size.

Online conversion for RFA to SKP is limited because RFA is a specialized BIM family format. Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Parametric behavior is not preserved when converting RFA to SKP. SketchUp receives static geometry, not a fully editable Revit family with constraints, formulas, or nested logic.

Units and scale should be checked carefully. Revit and SketchUp may interpret units differently, so always verify dimensions after import.

Geometry complexity matters. Highly detailed families can become heavy SKP files and may slow SketchUp performance. Simplifying the family before export often improves results.

Not every RFA exports cleanly. Some families contain Revit-specific features that do not translate well to generic 3D formats. For best results, use families with clean solid geometry and minimal nested complexity.

Materials, layers, and metadata may be simplified or lost during translation, so always inspect the imported model and clean it up before saving the final SKP file.
