We can't read RFA files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into DWG:

How to convert rfa to dwg file

Source format: RFA

RFA is a Revit Family file used by Autodesk Revit. It stores reusable building components such as doors, windows, furniture, fixtures, structural elements, and custom parametric objects. RFA files are used in BIM workflows for family authoring and reuse, not as a general-purpose CAD exchange format.

Target format: DWG

DWG is Autodesk’s widely used 2D/3D CAD drawing format. It is supported by AutoCAD and many other CAD applications. DWG is commonly used for construction drawings, detailing, coordination, and sharing geometry with consultants who may not use Revit.

How to convert RFA to DWG

RFA files are not normally converted directly to DWG as a standalone file conversion. In most workflows, you must open the family in Autodesk Revit or load it into a Revit project, then export the visible geometry or view to DWG. Revit is the most reliable desktop tool for this task.

  1. Open Autodesk Revit.
  2. Use File → Open → Family to open the .rfa file, or load it into a project with Insert → Load Family.
  3. If needed, place the family in a project and open a view that shows the geometry clearly.
  4. Export using File → Export → CAD Formats → DWG.
  5. Choose the export setup, layer mapping, units, and view options, then save the .dwg file.

If you only need a 2D result, export a plan, elevation, section, or detail view. If you need a 3D DWG, confirm that your Revit version and export settings support 3D output and that the receiving CAD software can read it correctly.

Desktop software options

Autodesk Revit is the primary choice because it can export DWG directly from family geometry or project views. Autodesk AutoCAD does not open RFA files directly, so it is useful only after the geometry has already been exported to DWG. For repetitive workflows, some teams use Revit add-ins or Autodesk Forge-based automation, but those are advanced options.

Online converters

Online converters are generally not recommended for RFA to DWG. RFA is a proprietary BIM family format, and accurate conversion usually depends on Revit’s export engine. If you use an online service, verify that it preserves geometry, units, and the intended 2D or 3D output. Reputable general-purpose file conversion sites may support DWG-related workflows, but direct RFA-to-DWG support is uncommon and often limited.

Quality and compatibility limits

Direct conversion is limited because RFA is parametric and DWG is primarily a CAD geometry format. During export, Revit-specific behavior is lost, including parameters, constraints, formulas, and family intelligence. The DWG usually contains only the visible geometry and annotation from the exported view.

Common issues include unit mismatches, layer mapping differences, loss of 3D parametric behavior, and simplification of curved or complex solids. For best results, clean up the family in Revit, use a dedicated export setup, and test the DWG in AutoCAD or another DWG viewer before sharing it.

Frequently asked questions

Will my RFA family parameters and constraints be preserved in DWG?

No, DWG does not preserve the parametric family behavior, constraints, types, or most BIM parameters from an RFA file. The export produces drawing geometry and annotations rather than an editable Revit family.

Can I convert an RFA file directly to DWG?

Usually, you must open the RFA in a compatible family editor and export a selected 2D view, sheet, or 3D view as DWG. The result depends on the view being exported, so it may not include every part of the family.

Will an RFA to DWG conversion keep the family geometry editable?

The geometry remains editable as CAD lines, curves, solids, or meshes where supported, but it is no longer editable as a parametric family. Nested components, voids, materials, and specialized family behavior may be simplified or omitted.

Why is my RFA to DWG export missing text or showing the wrong appearance?

DWG export can change annotations, fonts, line styles, layers, colours, and view-dependent geometry because these are mapped to CAD settings rather than family settings. Exporting the wrong view can also hide elements that are outside its visibility range or detail level.
