How to convert scdoc to dwg file

A recipient using AutoCAD or another DWG-based CAD system may need the model or drawing in DWG because those applications do not normally open native .scdoc files. Exporting from SpaceClaim or Ansys Discovery is the dependable route when the source must be shared, edited, or plotted in a DWG workflow.

What the SCDOC format is

.scdoc is the native document format used by ANSYS SpaceClaim and Ansys Discovery. It stores direct-modeling geometry, bodies, faces, sketches, annotations, and document structure for continued editing in those applications.

SCDOC files usually come from engineers, suppliers, and simulation workflows that use SpaceClaim-based modeling. SCDOC is an application-specific format rather than a general CAD exchange format, so AutoCAD, DraftSight, and many web viewers cannot open it directly.

What the DWG format is

.dwg is the native design and drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is supported by many other CAD programs. It can contain 2D lines, arcs, text, dimensions, hatches, and layers; some DWG implementations also store 3D solids, surfaces, and other model-space entities.

DWG is useful when the recipient needs AutoCAD-compatible drafting, layer organization, plotting, or downstream editing. It does not retain SpaceClaim's direct-modeling history, feature relationships, application-specific annotations, or every specialized geometry type.

How to export SCDOC as DWG

Using SpaceClaim or Ansys Discovery

  1. Open filename.scdoc with File → Open in SpaceClaim or Ansys Discovery.
  2. Decide whether the recipient needs a 2D drawing or model-space geometry. For a drawing, open or create the required drawing sheet, then prepare the views, scale, dimensions, layers, and title block. Hide construction geometry and bodies that should not appear in the export.
  3. Use File → Save As or the drawing's export command and select AutoCAD DWG (*.dwg). The exact command and available export scope depend on the installed version, license, and whether a model or drawing is active.
  4. If the export dialog provides settings, choose a DWG version compatible with the receiving CAD program and verify units, layers, line types, and the entities to export. An older DWG release can improve compatibility with legacy software.
  5. Open the resulting .dwg in AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, or the recipient's target application. Check units, scale, layers, line weights, fonts, dimensions, hatches, and curved or small features before delivery.

SpaceClaim installations commonly expose DWG export through a drawing workflow, while available model export options vary by version. If DWG is absent from File → Save As, check the drawing export command and the installed format support. Exporting to .dxf may provide a 2D fallback, but DXF is not a substitute for a required DWG file. Renaming .scdoc to .dwg does not convert its internal structure.

Choose the correct export type

For manufacturing or design documentation, export a prepared drawing rather than the raw solid model. A drawing export can include arranged views, dimensions, annotations, paper-space layout, and a title block; a model export may contain only model-space entities and may not reproduce the expected sheet.

Do not assume that every SpaceClaim or Discovery version converts a complete 3D SCDOC model into editable 3D DWG solids. If exact 3D geometry is required, export .step or .x_t (Parasolid) when supported, then create or export the DWG from a CAD system that supports the required 3D DWG entities. Use DWG directly when the receiving workflow is primarily 2D drafting.

Quality and compatibility limits

Units can be lost or interpreted differently during export. Measure a known feature in the receiving program and correct the import units before editing or plotting.

Expect possible changes to splines, trimmed surfaces, hatches, fonts, line weights, dimensions, and unsupported annotations. Recreate critical dimensions or annotations after inspection, and retain the original SCDOC as the authoritative editable model.

There is no generally reliable, reputable online converter with broad SCDOC support. Because SCDOC is application-specific and CAD files may contain confidential geometry, use the installed SpaceClaim or Discovery exporter instead of uploading the source to an unverified service.
