Convert VWX to DWG

Export Vectorworks VWX projects as editable DWG files for AutoCAD and compatible CAD systems.

We can't read VWX files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into DWG:

How to convert vwx to dwg file

Recipients using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, BricsCAD, or another DWG-based CAD system cannot normally open a Vectorworks project directly. Exporting a DWG provides editable CAD data for coordination, plotting, and long-term exchange without requiring Vectorworks at the receiving end.

What the VWX format is

VWX is the native project-file format used by Vectorworks, including Architect, Landmark, Spotlight, Fundamentals, and related editions. It can contain layers, classes, symbols, viewports, worksheets, parametric and plug-in objects, 2D geometry, 3D geometry, document settings, and other Vectorworks-specific data.

VWX is a proprietary working format rather than a general-purpose CAD exchange format. Applications that can open DWG or DXF cannot therefore be assumed to read VWX, and support can vary between Vectorworks releases. A current Vectorworks installation may open an older file, but files saved by a newer release may require that release or a compatible upgrade.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD and a widely supported exchange format for architecture, engineering, construction, surveying, and manufacturing software. It can carry editable 2D and 3D entities, dimensions, text, blocks, layers, model space, and paper-space layouts.

DWG is useful when the recipient must edit the drawing in AutoCAD, Autodesk Civil 3D, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another compatible CAD application. Export settings normally allow selection of a DWG release, drawing units, layer and class mapping, line and color mapping, fonts, and the treatment of sheet layers.

How to export from Vectorworks

  1. Open the VWX file in a Vectorworks version that supports it. For Project Sharing files, work from an updated local working file rather than exporting an outdated local copy.
  2. Save a duplicate of the file before changing export settings or document data.
  3. For a complete drawing, choose File → Export → Export DXF/DWG. Menu wording can differ slightly by Vectorworks release. For a partial export, select the required objects or configure the relevant design-layer and sheet-layer scope.
  4. In the export dialog, choose DWG, then select the DWG version required by the recipient. Use the newest mutually supported release unless an older release is specified.
  5. Set the export scope: selected objects, the active layer, visible layers, all design layers, sheet layers, or another available scope. Decide whether sheet layers should become paper-space layouts or be converted into model-space geometry.
  6. Confirm the document units, export units, and scale. Measure a known dimension after export; a unit mismatch can make otherwise correct geometry appear at the wrong size.
  7. Configure class-to-layer or layer mapping, lineweights, colors, fonts, hatches, 2D/3D options, and any available viewport or paper-space settings. Match the recipient’s CAD standard when one is provided.
  8. Export the file, then open the resulting .dwg in the recipient’s CAD application or a compatible DWG viewer. Check dimensions, text, layers, lineweights, viewports, title blocks, and plotted output.

Vectorworks is the most reliable conversion tool because it can interpret the original VWX objects before translating them into DWG entities. Export a .dxf copy as well when the receiving system has better DXF support or only 2D exchange is required; DXF is not a complete substitute for DWG layouts and object behavior.

Options when Vectorworks is unavailable

There is no generally reliable generic converter for arbitrary VWX files. Online services that accept DWG or DXF do not necessarily accept VWX, and changing a file extension does not convert its contents. Do not upload a VWX file to an online service unless the provider explicitly lists the specific VWX input and DWG output, states the supported versions, and is approved for the drawing’s confidentiality requirements.

For a reliable remote conversion, ask the file owner or a Vectorworks-equipped consultant to perform the export. A web-based CAD viewer or converter that does not explicitly document VWX support cannot preserve Vectorworks classes, parametric objects, viewports, or project data. Confidential architectural, engineering, and construction files should not be sent to an unapproved third-party service.

Quality and compatibility limits

DWG export translates Vectorworks data into the entities supported by the selected DWG release. Parametric objects, plug-in objects, BIM information, worksheets, custom object styles, rendered viewports, and some annotations may become simplified geometry, blocks, raster images, or non-editable content. A DWG is an exchange drawing, not a second copy of the full VWX project.

  • Units and scale: measure a known wall, grid, or dimension in the exported file.
  • Text and fonts: install the source fonts or map missing fonts; substitutions can change wrapping, spacing, and title-block alignment.
  • Classes and layers: inspect names, visibility, and mapping because Vectorworks classes and layers do not correspond perfectly to AutoCAD layers.
  • Hatches and lineweights: compare a plotted PDF with the source; hatch scale, pen mapping, and display settings can change.
  • Sheet layers: verify title blocks, viewports, annotations, page sizes, and paper-space layouts.
  • 3D data: inspect solids, meshes, and surfaces in the target application; some objects may export as faceted or simplified geometry.
  • Versions: open the output in the exact CAD release used by the recipient, because older DWG releases may omit newer entities or behave differently.

Frequently asked questions

Will my VWX layers and objects stay editable in DWG?

DWG keeps exported drawing geometry editable, but VWX-specific parametric objects, classes, and project intelligence may become ordinary lines, blocks, or 3D solids. Some layer and viewport settings can also change according to the export options.

Does VWX to DWG preserve the drawing scale and layout?

It usually preserves geometry and units when the export settings match the source, but sheets, viewports, annotations, and page layouts may not appear exactly the same. Check the drawing units and scale after conversion, especially when the file is intended for further CAD work.

Why are my fonts or text different after converting VWX to DWG?

Text can change when the original fonts, font styles, or text features are not supported in DWG. Missing fonts may be substituted, which can alter line wrapping, spacing, and the position of notes.

Why are some VWX objects missing or changed in the DWG file?

Objects that have no direct DWG equivalent, such as certain parametric, plug-in, or presentation elements, may be omitted or simplified during export. Exporting the required classes, layers, and visible design or sheet content helps prevent an apparently incomplete result.
