Convert VWX to PDF

Clients, printers, and archive systems often require a fixed-layout PDF instead of an editable Vectorworks file. Converting the drawing allows recipients to view and print it without Vectorworks while preserving the intended sheet size, page arrangement, and appearance.

What the VWX format is

.vwx is the native document format used by Vectorworks, a CAD and BIM application for architectural, engineering, landscape, entertainment, and other 2D and 3D design work. A VWX file can contain design layers, sheet layers, viewports, classes, layers, worksheets, symbols, 3D models, and parametric objects. Older Vectorworks releases used formats including .mcd.

A VWX document is not necessarily a single printable page. It can contain multiple sheets and views, so the PDF contains only the active sheet, selected pages, published sheets, or drawing area chosen during export.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format supported by web browsers, operating systems, print services, tablets, and document-management systems. It is suitable for distributing drawings when recipients need to view or print them but do not need to edit Vectorworks objects.

Vectorworks can produce PDFs containing vector lines and text, raster images, embedded or substituted fonts, hyperlinks, and—where supported by the version and export settings—PDF layers and document metadata. A PDF preserves the exported appearance; it does not preserve editable Vectorworks geometry, classes, layers, or parametric behavior.

Convert a VWX file with Vectorworks

1. Open the file in Vectorworks. A file saved by a newer release may not open directly in an older release, so use the release that created it or a compatible newer release. If the file is a project or workgroup file, obtain the required local working copy and referenced resources first.
2. For a printable drawing, activate the required sheet layer and check the page size, orientation, viewport crop, visible classes and layers, title block, drawing scale, line weights, fonts, and external references.
3. Choose File → Export → Export PDF. Select the active sheet, selected sheets, or other range offered by the installed Vectorworks version, set the PDF options, and save a file such as project-drawing.pdf. Keep vector output enabled when available.
4. For multiple sheets, choose File → Publish, add the required sheet layers, arrange their order, choose PDF as the output format, and publish either a combined multi-page PDF or separate PDFs if that option is available.
5. Open the resulting PDF in a viewer and inspect every page. Check the page size, orientation, crop boundaries, line weights, text, dimensions, legends, viewport rendering, and title block before sending it to a client or printer.

For a single page, File → Print followed by the operating system's PDF printer or Save as PDF command can also create a PDF. Native PDF export or publishing is preferable when page size, vector output, multiple sheets, layers, or export settings must be controlled.

Online conversion options

Most general-purpose online converters do not natively interpret VWX files, and services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar should be used only if their current supported-format list explicitly includes .vwx. A service that merely accepts the upload but cannot interpret Vectorworks layers, viewports, fonts, and resources may produce a blank, incomplete, or incorrectly scaled PDF.

For confidential plans, client drawings, or files containing sensitive project information, do not upload the VWX file to an online service. Export it locally with Vectorworks. If an online service explicitly supports VWX and the file is non-sensitive, test a copy and compare its PDF with a locally exported version before relying on it.

Quality and compatibility checks

• Export from a sheet layer when the drawing is intended for printing. Exporting a design layer can include unexpected extents or produce a result that does not match the arranged sheet.
• Use vector PDF output where available. Rasterized pages can make thin lines, text, and dimensions appear blurred when zoomed or printed.
• Resolve missing fonts, textures, images, referenced files, and other resources before export. Font substitution can change label wrapping and title-block alignment.
• Verify scale with a known dimension or scale bar. In the PDF viewer and printer dialog, choose Actual size or 100% rather than Fit when measured scale is required.
• Rendered or shaded viewports can make PDFs large. Reducing image resolution or render quality decreases file size but can remove visual detail.
• Keep the original VWX file and its required resources for future editing. The PDF is a distribution or print copy, not a substitute for the editable Vectorworks document.
