How to convert drw to dwg file

AutoCAD and other engineering applications may require a drawing in DWG format for editing, review, or exchange. The correct conversion depends on the application that created the DRW file because .drw is used by several unrelated programs.

What the DRW format is

.drw is an extension, not a single standardized format. It is used by applications such as Micrografx Designer and Creo Parametric, among others. Depending on its source, a DRW file can contain vector artwork, 2D drafting geometry, dimensions, text, layers, page layouts, or views and annotations linked to a 3D model.

Identify the originating application from the file’s source, operating-system association, documentation, or available metadata. A DRW file opened in the wrong program may produce an error or show incomplete or empty content; different DRW formats are not interchangeable.

What the DWG format is

DWG is Autodesk’s native drawing format for AutoCAD and is also supported by DraftSight, BricsCAD, nanoCAD, and other CAD systems. It can store editable 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, layouts, and drawing settings.

DWG is the appropriate target when the recipient needs an editable AutoCAD-compatible drawing. Select a DWG release supported by the receiving software because newer versions may not open in older CAD applications.

How to convert a CAD DRW file

Use the application that created the DRW whenever possible. It is the only reliable way to interpret proprietary objects, references, units, and annotations before exporting.

Creo Parametric DRW files

  1. Open the drawing in Creo Parametric and resolve missing model or component references.
  2. Check sheet size, view scale, units, fonts, line styles, dimensions, and required sheets.
  3. Use File → Save As → Save a Copy and select DWG if the installed Creo version provides DWG export. Otherwise select DXF and export each required sheet.
  4. Open the exported file in AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, or another CAD program.
  5. Check units, scale, layers, text, dimensions, and layouts, then use Save As to create the required DWG version if the intermediate file was DXF.

A Creo export normally transfers drawing geometry and annotations rather than the original parametric relationships. Model links, feature intelligence, constraints, and application-specific symbols may not survive the export.

Micrografx Designer DRW files

  1. Open the file in Micrografx Designer or a compatible version of the application that created it.
  2. Use File → Export and select DXF if that format is available.
  3. Set the correct measurement units and export the required page or artwork.
  4. Open the DXF in a CAD application, correct scale and layer assignments, and use Save As to produce DWG.

Some legacy Designer files require the original or a compatible older installation. If the program cannot export DXF, a vector export may preserve outlines but will usually require geometry cleanup in CAD. PNG and JPEG exports are raster images and cannot produce accurate, editable DWG geometry.

Desktop and online conversion tools

AutoCAD, DraftSight, and BricsCAD are suitable for the final DXF-to-DWG step because they provide unit controls, layer inspection, drawing audits, and DWG-version selection. The free ODA File Converter can convert supported DWG and DXF files between compatible versions, but it does not read arbitrary DRW files; an export from the originating application is still required.

CloudConvert and Zamzar can be tested only when their format list explicitly identifies the exact DRW dialect. Generic online services often do not support proprietary DRW files, and uploading confidential engineering drawings may violate security or contractual requirements. Open the returned file in desktop CAD software and verify it instead of treating a successful upload as proof of a correct conversion.

Quality and compatibility checks

  • Confirm units before and after export. Treating millimeters as inches, or inches as millimeters, changes scale by a factor of 25.4.
  • Compare known distances and inspect sheet size, view scale, layers, blocks, lineweights, hatches, splines, and paper-space layouts.
  • Check fonts because missing typefaces can cause substitutions, shifted text, or conversion to outlines.
  • Expect dimensions to become non-associative entities and expect some annotations, symbols, fills, or hatch patterns to change.
  • Do not expect parametric constraints, 3D model links, feature history, or proprietary application objects to remain editable in DWG.
  • Keep the original DRW and verify critical measurements in the resulting DWG before using it for manufacturing, construction, or regulatory documentation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a DRW file to an editable DWG file?

Yes, if the DRW application supports exporting its drawing objects to DWG or an intermediate CAD format. Because DRW is an application-specific extension, the result depends on which program created the file and which objects it contains.

Will my DRW layers and text stay editable in DWG?

They may not stay fully editable because unsupported layers, fonts, fills, symbols, and custom objects can be flattened or changed during export. Basic lines, arcs, and other standard CAD geometry usually transfer more reliably than application-specific effects.

Why does my DRW to DWG conversion have missing text or wrong dimensions?

This usually happens when the source font, measurement units, or drawing objects are not supported by the DWG export workflow. Check the source units and substitute unavailable fonts before exporting, then verify the scale and dimensions in the resulting drawing.

Can I just rename .drw to .dwg?

No, changing the extension does not convert the file structure. The DRW file must be opened by the application that created it and exported through a DWG-compatible CAD workflow.
