Convert SKD to DWG

A current AutoCAD or other DWG-based CAD system may not open an archived AutoSketch drawing directly. Converting the file provides editable CAD geometry for exchange, revision, or migration from a legacy design archive.

What the SKD format is

.skd is the native drawing format used by Autodesk AutoSketch, a discontinued 2D CAD application. It can contain lines, arcs, circles, text, dimensions, layers, fills, symbols, and other AutoSketch drawing data. SKD files are most common in legacy design archives and organizations that used AutoSketch.

SKD is proprietary and version-sensitive. Current AutoCAD does not generally open it directly, and most general-purpose online converters do not support it as an input format. The AutoSketch release that created the file determines which export formats and entities are available.

What the DWG format is

.dwg is the native drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is supported by applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD, and other professional CAD systems. It stores editable 2D or 3D geometry together with layers, blocks, dimensions, text, styles, and related drawing data.

DWG is usually preferable to an image or PDF when the recipient must edit the drawing. Compatibility still depends on the DWG release, the destination application, and whether the source contains entities that cannot be represented in DWG.

Convert with AutoSketch

1. Open the SKD file in the AutoSketch release that created it, or in a later release that can read it. AutoSketch is discontinued, so this may require an existing licensed installation or legacy workstation; installing current AutoCAD will not normally solve the problem.
2. Use File → Open, then inspect the drawing at several zoom levels. Check layers, scale, units, text, line types, fills, symbols, and dimensions before exporting.
3. Use File → Save As or File → Export. If the program offers DWG, select it and choose the DWG release required by the recipient. Preserve layers and set the source drawing units when those options are available.
4. If only DXF is available, export a DXF instead. DXF is the normal interchange route for legacy CAD data and can then be converted to DWG by a current CAD application.
5. Open the result in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another compatible CAD editor. Measure a known distance, check the insertion scale and units, inspect layers, and compare critical dimensions with the original SKD file.

Convert an exported DXF to DWG

1. In AutoSketch, choose File → Export or File → Save As, select DXF, and save an intermediate copy. Keep the original SKD unchanged.
2. Open the DXF in AutoCAD or another DWG-capable desktop CAD application. Confirm the import units rather than accepting an uncertain default.
3. Check text, dimensions, blocks, hatches, line weights, layers, and missing fonts. Repair or replace unsupported objects before saving.
4. Use File → Save As, select DWG, and choose the version required by the receiving system. AutoCAD is the safest choice when strict AutoCAD compatibility is required; BricsCAD, DraftSight, and other DWG writers may interpret imported entities differently.

An online service is practical only after AutoSketch has produced a supported intermediate format. Services such as Zamzar or CloudConvert may offer DXF to DWG conversion, but their current format lists must be checked because support changes and neither service should be assumed to accept SKD. Do not upload confidential or regulated drawings unless the provider's retention, processing, and deletion terms are acceptable; test the returned DWG before sending it onward.

Quality and compatibility limits

DXF export can discard or alter AutoSketch-specific symbols, associative dimensions, hatch definitions, text formatting, custom line types, fills, line weights, and other unsupported data. A drawing that looks correct on screen may still have incorrect units, scale, geometry, or dimension values.

Nonstandard fonts may be substituted, changing text width and placement. Proprietary symbols may need to be recreated as blocks. Verify a known measurement, inspect every layer, review critical annotations, and compare the converted file with the SKD original before relying on it for fabrication, surveying, or construction.

Retain the original SKD and the intermediate DXF alongside the final DWG. Avoid repeated DXF/DWG conversions because each import and export can remove additional metadata or unsupported entities.
