Convert SKD to DXF

A supplier, AutoCAD-compatible workflow, or CNC application may require editable geometry in DXF instead of an archived AutoSketch drawing. Converting the file preserves usable vector geometry for inspection, modification, measurement, or fabrication.

What the SKD format is

SKD is the proprietary drawing format used by Autodesk AutoSketch, a discontinued 2D CAD application for floor plans, schematics, technical drawings, and general drafting. An SKD file can contain lines, arcs, circles, text, dimensions, layers, symbols, fills, and AutoSketch-specific drawing settings.

SKD is not a general CAD interchange format. Current AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, QCAD, LibreCAD, and similar applications generally do not open it directly. SKD files are most often encountered in legacy project archives or on computers that still contain an AutoSketch installation.

What the DXF format is

DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) is Autodesk's CAD interchange format. It is commonly stored as an ASCII text file, although binary DXF variants also exist. AutoCAD and many other CAD, CAM, GIS, laser-cutting, and CNC applications can import or export it.

DXF can carry exchangeable entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, splines, text, layers, blocks, hatches, and some dimension information. Unlike a PDF or raster image, the resulting geometry can normally be selected, measured, edited, and used to generate manufacturing paths.

How to convert SKD to DXF

1. Make a backup of the original .skd file. Use the AutoSketch release that created it when possible; older releases may not read files saved by newer releases.
2. Open the file in Autodesk AutoSketch with File → Open. If the file opens only in an older release, save a working copy in that release before exporting. A virtual machine may be necessary when the legacy application cannot run on the current operating system.
3. Check drawing units, scale, layers, line types, text, dimensions, symbols, and external references in AutoSketch. Resolve missing fonts and symbols before export.
4. Use the version's DXF command, usually found under File → Export or File → Save As, and select DXF if it is available. Choose an older DXF release when the receiving application has limited compatibility. Menu names and supported DXF versions differ between AutoSketch releases.
5. Open the exported .dxf in the destination CAD program. Set or confirm the insertion units, then measure a known distance against the source drawing. DXF files can lack reliable unit metadata, so a drawing may import at the wrong scale even when its coordinates are unchanged.

AutoSketch is the most dependable converter because it can interpret the proprietary SKD database before writing DXF entities. AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, QCAD, and LibreCAD are useful for checking, repairing, or resaving the exported file, but they are not reliable direct SKD readers. Do not assume that changing .skd to .dxf in the filename performs a conversion.

Online and alternative conversion options

There is no broadly reliable general-purpose online converter for Autodesk AutoSketch SKD files. Services that accept common CAD formats such as DWG or DXF usually do not parse SKD; an upload form accepting the extension does not prove that it understands the format. Use an online service only when it explicitly identifies Autodesk AutoSketch SKD as an input, documents the conversion, and provides acceptable privacy and retention terms.

For confidential or technically important drawings, use AutoSketch locally. After producing an intermediate DXF, a desktop application such as QCAD, LibreCAD, DraftSight, or BricsCAD can remove unwanted entities and save a DXF version accepted by the recipient. A utility intended for DWG/DXF translation, such as ODA File Converter, cannot normally read the original SKD file and is not a substitute for AutoSketch.

Quality and compatibility limits

DXF transfers drawing geometry, not necessarily the complete AutoSketch document. Custom symbols, associative behavior, dimension styles, filled regions, line-weight definitions, fonts, print layouts, page settings, and application-specific metadata may be simplified or lost. Missing fonts can change text width and placement; unsupported hatches, splines, or symbols may become approximated geometry or disappear.

Inspect layer visibility, line types, text, dimensions, hatch boundaries, and closed contours after import. For CNC, laser cutting, or plotting, remove duplicate and zero-length entities, confirm that contours are closed and coplanar, check the intended units at full scale, and verify that the receiving application does not interpret construction geometry as cutting geometry.
