3ds to dxf conversion is possible, but it will only convert the mesh data from the 3d model to DXF format. You can achieve it for example in 3ds Max itself using the Application Menu ► Export ► Select File To Export dialog ► Save As Type ► AutoCAD (.dxf files. Plenty of other 3rd party software are also capable of this conversion.
