A DXF file is required by many CAD, laser-cutting, CNC, and 2D drafting applications, while 3MF is mainly used for 3D printing. Converting between them usually means extracting a 2D outline, projection, or section from the 3D model rather than preserving the complete printable object.

What the 3MF format is

3MF, or 3D Manufacturing Format, is a ZIP-based package containing XML model data and optional textures, materials, colors, thumbnails, and print metadata. It was designed to store 3D-printing models more completely than STL.

3MF files are commonly created by CAD and slicing software such as Autodesk Fusion, SolidWorks, PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, and Ultimaker Cura. You may encounter them when downloading a 3D-printable design, exporting a project from a slicer, or transferring a model between 3D-printing applications.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, stores CAD geometry such as lines, arcs, polylines, circles, layers, dimensions, and sometimes 3D entities. It is widely supported by AutoCAD, DraftSight, LibreCAD, QCAD, Fusion, laser-cutter software, sign-making tools, and CNC workflows.

DXF is preferable when the receiving application needs editable vector geometry, a cutting path, or a dimensioned 2D drawing. It does not normally preserve 3MF-specific information such as slicer settings, textures, colors, printer profiles, or material assignments.

How to actually convert 3MF to DXF

Use the online converter

  1. Open the 101convert.com 3MF-to-DXF converter.
  2. Upload the .3mf file and choose DXF as the output format.
  3. If the converter provides projection, orientation, section, scale, or unit options, select the required view and set the units explicitly, such as millimeters.
  4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .dxf file.
  5. Open the result in a CAD program and verify the scale, closed contours, layer structure, and orientation before sending it to a cutter or CNC machine.

Because a 3MF model is three-dimensional and DXF is often used for two-dimensional drawings, the conversion may generate only a default projection or outline. If you need a specific face, cross-section, or manufacturing profile, use a desktop CAD workflow instead.

Convert with FreeCAD for controlled projections

  1. Open FreeCAD and load the .3mf file using File → Open. The model normally appears as a mesh.
  2. Switch to the Part workbench, select the mesh, and use Part → Create shape from mesh. Set a suitable tolerance; a very small tolerance can create a heavy, complex shape.
  3. Orient the model to the required top, front, or side view. For a cut profile, create or select the appropriate section geometry instead of exporting the whole model projection.
  4. Switch to the Draft workbench, select the converted shape, and create a 2D projection with the Shape2DView or equivalent Draft projection command.
  5. Select the resulting 2D object and use File → Export. Choose the DXF format and save the file as model.dxf.
  6. Open the DXF in LibreCAD, QCAD, AutoCAD, or the target manufacturing software. Confirm that the drawing uses the intended units and that contours are closed.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

There is no universal one-to-one conversion from a 3D-printing mesh to a useful 2D CAD drawing. A projection can contain overlapping edges, internal lines, tiny facets, and open contours. A laser cutter usually needs a clean, closed 2D outline rather than every visible edge of the mesh.

Mesh-to-DXF conversion can produce thousands of short line segments, especially for curved surfaces. Simplify or redraw the profile in CAD when the output is too large, inaccurate, or difficult for the receiving program to process.

Check the measurement after export. 3MF commonly uses millimeter-based model dimensions, while some DXF readers interpret unit information inconsistently. Measure a known feature and correct the drawing scale before fabrication.

For a full editable 3D CAD model, DXF is usually the wrong target. STEP or IGES is more appropriate when the source contains solid geometry; STL or OBJ is more appropriate when the source is only a polygon mesh.
