Free online SKP to DXF converter

A CNC router, laser cutter, or CAD application may require DXF when the source design is available only as a SketchUp model. Converting it provides editable CAD geometry for drafting, fabrication, measurement, and exchange with AutoCAD-compatible software.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp’s native 3D model format, created by Trimble’s SketchUp software. It can contain faces, edges, groups, components, tags (formerly called layers), materials, scenes, styles, dimensions, section data, and construction geometry. Architects, interior designers, engineers, woodworkers, site planners, and 3D model libraries commonly use it.

SKP is designed for SketchUp rather than general-purpose CAD exchange. Other applications may not interpret SketchUp materials, textures, dynamic components, scenes, styles, sections, or newer SKP versions correctly.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is an Autodesk-developed CAD interchange format supported by AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, FreeCAD, and many CAM, CNC, and laser-cutting applications. A DXF can contain lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, dimensions, 3D faces, meshes, and other entities, depending on its version and the exporting software.

DXF is useful when the recipient needs editable CAD geometry instead of a SketchUp project. It is especially practical for line-based 2D drawings and fabrication profiles, but it does not preserve SketchUp scenes, textures, shadows, styles, animation, or most component behavior.

Convert with SketchUp Pro

SketchUp Pro for desktop is the most predictable local option because it opens SKP files natively and supports DWG/DXF export. CAD export availability differs between desktop editions, SketchUp for Web plans, and application versions; if the export commands are absent, that edition cannot perform the export directly.

Export a 3D DXF

1. Open the .skp file in SketchUp Pro and save a backup copy.
2. Check the model units under Window → Model Info → Units. Hide or remove guides, construction geometry, and objects that should not enter the DXF.
3. Choose File → Export → 3D Model.
4. Select an AutoCAD DXF file type, choose a filename ending in .dxf, and open Options when available.
5. Set the DXF/AutoCAD version and export units to match the receiving CAD or CAM application. Use selection-only export, layer separation, or two-sided face export only when the destination requires those settings.
6. Export the file, open it in the target application, and check a known dimension, orientation, layers, face orientation, and required geometry.

A 3D DXF transfers edges and faces or mesh-like geometry; it normally does not create a native parametric or ACIS solid. Confirm that the destination accepts 3D faces or meshes before using this method for a 3D workflow.

Export a 2D DXF

1. Set the required view. Use Camera → Standard Views → Top and Camera → Parallel Projection for an orthographic plan, or use the appropriate front, side, elevation, or section view.
2. Hide unwanted groups, components, guides, dimensions, and annotations. Activate the required section plane if the output is a section and verify the visible cut geometry.
3. Choose File → Export → 2D Graphic and select the AutoCAD DXF format.
4. Open Options if available, set the output scale and units, and export.

Use 2D export for floor plans, elevations, profiles, and cutting outlines. It exports the current projected view rather than the complete 3D model, so perspective views are unsuitable for dimension-critical drawings.

Convert without desktop software

Availability, file-size limits, supported SKP versions, and export options can vary, so inspect the downloaded file in CAD software before using it.

Do not upload confidential architectural, engineering, or client models unless the organization permits online processing. For large, private, or dimension-critical files, a local SketchUp Pro export avoids transferring the source model to a third party.

Quality and compatibility limits

• DXF is not a full-fidelity replacement for SKP. Materials, textures, shadows, scenes, styles, animation, dynamic behavior, and most SketchUp presentation data are discarded.
• SketchUp curves are represented by polygonal edges internally. Depending on the export mode and receiving application, circles and arcs may become segmented geometry or polylines. Increase the segment count of important curved objects before export when smoother outlines are required.
• Different applications handle DXF versions, layers, units, triangulation, 3D faces, and meshes differently. A model that appears solid in SketchUp may import as disconnected surfaces or faceted geometry.
• For CNC, laser, or waterjet work, use a clean orthographic 2D export, remove duplicate and overlapping edges, close every profile, and remove construction geometry. An open contour or stray edge can produce an incorrect toolpath.
• Do not rely only on the DXF unit setting. Measure a known distance after import because some CAD and fabrication programs interpret unitless or legacy DXF files differently.
• Check dimensions, labels, section results, guides, and construction geometry separately: these items may be omitted or exported differently from the visible model geometry.
