Convert SKP to DXF

A CAD, CNC, laser-cutting, or surveying application may require DXF instead of SketchUp’s native SKP format. Conversion provides editable CAD geometry for drafting, fabrication, measurement, and exchange with AutoCAD-compatible software.

What the SKP format is

SKP is SketchUp’s native project format, used by SketchUp desktop, SketchUp for Web, architects, engineers, designers, and 3D model libraries. It can contain 3D faces and edges, groups, components, materials, scenes, styles, dimensions, section data, and model metadata.

SKP is designed for SketchUp rather than general-purpose CAD exchange. Other software may not interpret materials, textures, dynamic components, section data, styles, or newer SKP versions correctly.

What the DXF format is

DXF, or Drawing Exchange Format, is an Autodesk-developed CAD exchange format supported by AutoCAD, DraftSight, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, FreeCAD, many CAM applications, and some CNC and laser-cutting workflows. Depending on the DXF version and software, it can contain lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, dimensions, 3D faces, meshes, and other CAD entities.

DXF is useful when the recipient needs editable geometry rather than a SketchUp project. It does not preserve SketchUp scenes, textures, shadows, styles, animation, or most component behavior.

Convert with SketchUp Pro

SketchUp Pro for desktop is the most reliable local option because it reads SKP natively and provides direct DWG/DXF export. Export availability can differ between desktop editions, SketchUp for Web plans, and application versions; if the CAD export commands are missing, the current license does not provide them.

Export a 3D DXF

1. Open the model in SketchUp Pro and save a backup copy.
2. Set the correct model units under Window → Model Info → Units. Remove or hide construction geometry, guides, and objects that should not be included.
3. Choose File → Export → 3D Model.
4. Set the file type to AutoCAD Files (*.dwg, *.dxf), choose a filename ending in .dxf, and open Options if available.
5. Select a DXF/AutoCAD version and confirm the export units. Use layer separation, selection-only export, or two-sided face export only when the receiving application requires those options.
6. Export the file, open it in the target CAD program, and check a known dimension, layer structure, face orientation, and the presence of required geometry.

A 3D export is appropriate when the recipient needs spatial model geometry. It normally transfers edges and faces, not a native parametric or ACIS solid.

Export a 2D DXF

1. Set the required view. Use Camera → Standard Views → Top and Camera → Parallel Projection for an orthographic plan; use the relevant elevation, section, or custom view for other drawings.
2. Hide unwanted groups, components, dimensions, guides, and annotations. Activate the required section plane if the output is a section, then confirm that the resulting cut geometry is visible.
3. Choose File → Export → 2D Graphic.
4. Select the AutoCAD DXF format, open Options, set the output scale and units, and export.

Use 2D export for floor plans, elevations, profiles, and cutting outlines. It exports the selected view rather than the complete 3D model, so perspective views are unsuitable for dimension-critical drawings.

Use an online converter

CloudConvert and Convertio are established online conversion services that may offer SKP-to-DXF conversion; availability, file-size limits, supported SKP versions, and output capabilities can change. Before uploading, confirm that the service’s current page explicitly lists both .skp input and .dxf output, then download and inspect the result in CAD software.

1. Upload the SKP file only after checking the service’s privacy and retention terms.
2. Choose DXF as the output format and select any available version or unit settings.
3. Convert and download the result.
4. Measure a known distance, inspect layers and geometry, and test closed profiles before using the file for fabrication.

Online conversion is unsuitable for confidential architectural or engineering models unless the organization permits cloud processing. It can also fail on large files, unsupported SKP versions, hidden geometry, complex components, or models requiring precise 2D cleanup. Use SketchUp Pro locally for private, large, or dimension-critical work.

Quality and compatibility limits

• DXF is not a full-fidelity replacement for SKP. Materials, textures, shadows, scenes, styles, animation, and SketchUp-specific behavior generally disappear.
• SketchUp curves are approximated by segmented edges. Increase the segment count of important circles and arcs before export, while recognizing that DXF may still contain polylines rather than true analytic curves.
• Different importers handle 3D faces, meshes, triangulation, layers, and units differently. A model that appears solid in SketchUp may import as disconnected surfaces or faceted geometry.
• For CNC, laser, or waterjet work, export a clean orthographic 2D view, remove duplicate and overlapping edges, close every profile, and verify scale with a known dimension before machining.
• Do not rely only on the DXF unit label. Measure a known distance after import because some CAD and fabrication programs interpret unitless or legacy DXF files differently.
