A SketchUp model must be exported as PNG when a document, website, image editor, or recipient needs a flat image instead of an editable 3D file. The PNG contains only the selected view, so it can be shared without SketchUp but cannot be converted back into the original model.
SKP and PNG formats
SKP is the native 3D model format used by Trimble SketchUp. Architects, interior designers, construction teams, furniture suppliers, and 3D asset libraries use it to store model geometry, materials, components, groups, tags, scenes, styles, camera views, shadows, and texture data.
PNG is a lossless raster-image format supported by browsers, office software, operating systems, and image editors. It preserves sharp linework and text better than JPEG, supports alpha transparency, and is suitable for plans, elevations, viewport captures, and rendered views.
PNG is not a 3D or vector format. It does not retain geometry, layers as editable objects, camera data, components, or separately editable annotations. For scalable technical linework, export PDF, DWG, or SVG where the required SketchUp edition and workflow support those formats.
Export a PNG from SketchUp
- Open the
.skpfile in SketchUp. A file saved by a newer SketchUp version cannot normally be opened in an older version; ask the sender to save a compatible SKP version if necessary. - Choose the view to export. Select a saved scene if one exists, or position the camera manually. For an elevation, plan, or other orthographic view, use Camera → Parallel Projection and choose a view from Camera → Standard Views.
- Set the visible model appearance. Use View → Face Style, View → Shadows, section tools, and the Styles panel as needed. Hide axes, guides, section planes, hidden geometry, or other construction items that should not appear in the image.
- In SketchUp desktop, select File → Export → 2D Graphic, choose PNG, and open the export options.
- Set the required width and height in pixels, then export the file. Enable a transparent background only if the PNG must be placed over another image or page background.
SketchUp for Web provides PNG export through its export or download menu when that function is included with the current workspace subscription. Its available options can differ from SketchUp desktop, so use desktop SketchUp when exact output dimensions, styles, scenes, or extension-based rendering are required.
Alternatives when SketchUp is unavailable
Trimble SketchUp Viewer can open supported SKP files for inspection, but an operating-system screenshot is limited to the screen resolution and is not a substitute for a high-resolution export.
For simple, non-confidential files, online services such as CloudConvert and Convertio may offer SKP-to-PNG conversion. Check their current SKP-version support and output settings before uploading: web converters can flatten the model through an intermediate format and may change textures, materials, camera framing, or scene selection. Do not upload building plans, client models, or proprietary designs without reviewing the provider's retention and privacy terms.
Blender, FreeCAD, and third-party SKP importers are not reliable replacement export tools because SKP import support varies by version and can alter materials, groups, and scene information.
Output quality and compatibility
Export dimensions control raster detail. For 300 ppi printing, an 8 × 10 inch image needs 2400 × 3000 pixels. Enlarging a low-resolution PNG later does not add model detail, and a larger export cannot improve low-resolution textures already used in the SKP file.
Create and save separate scenes before exporting multiple plans, elevations, perspectives, or detail views. Each PNG is a capture of one scene or current viewport state.
SketchUp's standard viewport export may not match a photorealistic rendering. To include rendered lighting, reflections, and renderer-specific materials, render the model first in software such as V-Ray for SketchUp, Enscape, or D5 Render, then save that renderer's output as PNG.
PNG files can be larger than JPEG files, especially with high-resolution textures or renders. Use PNG for linework, labels, transparency, and images that may be edited repeatedly; use JPEG when smaller files matter more than lossless detail. Keep the original .skp file for all future model edits.

Frequently asked questions
Will my SketchUp model stay editable when I convert SKP to PNG?
No, the SKP model is flattened into a raster image, so its 3D geometry, dimensions, components, and scene data are not editable in the PNG. The image can show the model but cannot be converted back into the original SketchUp structure.
Does SKP to PNG keep transparency?
It can keep transparent backgrounds and visible transparent materials when the export settings and source view support them. If a solid background or opaque rendering style is selected, the PNG will include that background instead.
What resolution should I use when exporting SKP to PNG?
Choose the output resolution based on how large or detailed the image needs to be, because PNG stores pixels rather than 3D geometry. Higher resolution preserves more detail but generally produces a larger image.
Why does my PNG show the wrong SketchUp view or missing parts?
The PNG exports the currently selected camera, scene, visibility state, and display style, not the entire model independently of those settings. Activate the intended scene and check hidden geometry, section cuts, shadows, and materials before exporting.
