CAD drawings stored as DWT templates must be rendered to PNG when a recipient needs a viewable image instead of an AutoCAD template, such as for documentation, presentations, or web pages. PNG also lets people inspect the drawing without installing CAD software, but it does not preserve editable geometry.
What the DWT format is
DWT is the AutoCAD Drawing Template format. AutoCAD and compatible CAD applications use it as a starting file for new drawings; it can contain layers, dimension styles, text styles, blocks, layouts, title blocks, units, and plotting settings. You commonly encounter DWT files in company CAD standards, architectural templates, engineering offices, and title-block libraries.
A DWT is based on the same drawing structure used by DWG, but it is intended to supply predefined settings rather than serve as the main saved project drawing. Opening it in a CAD application normally creates or edits a template document.
What the PNG format is
PNG is a raster image format that stores each rendered pixel. It supports lossless compression, sharp text and linework, and optional transparency, making it suitable for diagrams, screenshots, drawing previews, documentation, and web publication.
PNG does not retain layers, blocks, dimensions as editable objects, model-space coordinates, CAD metadata, or plot styles as separate data. Use it when the recipient needs a visual representation rather than a drawing that can be modified.
How to convert DWT to PNG
Using the built-in online converter
- Open the DWT-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.dwtfile and choosePNGas the output format. - Start the conversion and download the resulting
.pngfile when processing finishes.
This method is suitable when you need a rendered image without installing CAD software. Review the output for the correct layout, scale, line weights, and visible layers before sharing it.
Using AutoCAD
- Open the
.dwtfile in AutoCAD. If AutoCAD prompts for a template action, open it for editing or create a drawing from it first. - Select the required model-space view or layout tab. A template can contain several layouts, so each layout that needs an image may require a separate export.
- For a layout-based image, open Output → Plot, select a PNG plotter such as
PublishToWeb PNG.pc3if available, set the paper size, plot area, scale, orientation, plot style table, and resolution, then plot to a PNG file. - For a quick object export, use the
PNGOUTcommand, select the objects, specify a filename, and confirm the output location.
AutoCAD installations can use different plotter configurations. If a PNG plotter is not listed, configure or install the relevant raster plotter supplied with the CAD installation, or use the built-in online converter.
Quality and compatibility limits
PNG output is resolution-dependent: increasing the pixel dimensions or plot resolution preserves small labels and thin lines better than enlarging a low-resolution image afterward. Set the intended paper size and DPI before plotting; 300 DPI is generally more suitable for printed documentation than screen-only output.
Plot styles, hidden layers, lineweights, annotation scales, viewport clipping, and background color affect the rendered image. Check the plot preview because a DWT may contain multiple layouts or layers that are not visible in the current view.
The conversion produces a flattened visual result. Keep the original DWT or create a DWG copy when recipients may need to edit geometry, inspect layers, measure accurately, or reuse template settings.
