What the DWT format is
DWT is the AutoCAD Drawing Template format used to provide reusable drawing settings. AutoCAD and compatible Autodesk products create DWT files containing items such as drawing geometry, layers, dimension and text styles, layouts, title blocks, units, and plotting settings.
You typically encounter a DWT when starting a new AutoCAD drawing from a company or project template. It is not an image format, so a GIF conversion must first choose a view, scale, background, and output resolution.
What the GIF format is
GIF is a raster image format supported by web browsers, documentation tools, and many basic image viewers. It stores up to 256 colors per frame, supports one-bit transparency, and can contain multiple frames for animation.
GIF suits simple CAD line drawings, diagrams, and screenshots with limited colors. It is unsuitable when the result must remain editable, retain CAD layers, preserve exact dimensions, or display fine color gradients; PNG is usually better for high-resolution or color-rich output.
How to actually convert DWT to GIF
For a direct conversion without installing software, use the free converter on 101convert.com:
- Open the DWT-to-GIF conversion page on 101convert.com.
- Upload the
.dwtfile and select GIF as the output format. - Start the conversion and download the generated
.giffile.
For a controlled desktop workflow, use AutoCAD to rasterize the template, then ImageMagick to create the GIF:
- Open the DWT in AutoCAD with File → Open. If AutoCAD treats it as a template for a new drawing, save the working copy as
drawing.dwg. - Set the required view, layers, background, and drawing area. Use Output → Plot, select
PublishToWeb PNG.pc3as the printer or plotter, and choose a window or extents for the plot. - Set the paper size and output resolution high enough for the thinnest lines, then create
drawing.png. - Convert the PNG with ImageMagick:
magick drawing.png -colors 256 drawing.gif
For a transparent background, use a PNG produced with transparency and add -transparent white only when white is the actual background color:
magick drawing.png -colors 256 -transparent white drawing.gif
Quality and compatibility limitations
The conversion removes CAD structure: layers, blocks, dimensions, coordinates, layouts, and editability do not survive in GIF. Text and thin linework can become unreadable if the plot resolution is too low, so increase raster dimensions before reducing colors.
GIF's 256-color palette can introduce dithering in shaded drawings. Use a white or transparent background deliberately, because GIF transparency is binary and cannot preserve partially transparent anti-aliased edges. Animated GIF output is not normally meaningful for a static DWT; each animation frame would need to be rendered separately.
