Applications that accept Windows Enhanced Metafile graphics but cannot open AutoCAD templates require this conversion. Converting a DWT also provides a shareable vector image of its visible drawing content, although the result is not an editable CAD database.

What the DWT format is

DWT is the AutoCAD drawing-template format. AutoCAD and compatible Autodesk products use it to store default drawing settings such as units, layers, dimension styles, text styles, layouts, title blocks, plot settings, and sometimes reusable geometry.

You encounter DWT files when starting a drawing from a company standard, creating a project-specific template, or receiving a template instead of a normal .dwg drawing. A DWT is not normally the final exchange format: AutoCAD uses it as the basis for a new drawing and generally saves the resulting work as DWG.

What the EMF format is

EMF (Enhanced Metafile) is a Windows vector-graphics format used by Microsoft Office, Windows printing workflows, desktop-publishing applications, and graphics software. It stores drawing commands for lines, curves, text, fills, and images rather than storing CAD objects such as layers, constraints, blocks, or model-space coordinates.

EMF is useful when the destination application needs scalable Windows artwork. It normally prints more sharply than a bitmap at different sizes and is better suited than a screenshot for line drawings, title blocks, diagrams, and other predominantly vector-based CAD content.

How to convert DWT to EMF

2. Select or drag the .dwt file into the upload area.
3. Choose EMF as the output format if the site presents a format selector.

For a CAD-controlled result, open the template in AutoCAD first. Use File → Open and select the DWT. AutoCAD typically opens a template as the basis for a new drawing; verify the geometry, units, layers, layouts, and title block, then save a working copy as .dwg before exporting or plotting.

Set the required layout, paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, and lineweight settings in the CAD application before conversion. If the desktop workflow offers EMF as a plotter or export destination, select it and create the file from the chosen layout. If it offers only WMF, PDF, or raster output, use the online converter for the DWT or produce an intermediate vector file with a CAD-compatible application that explicitly supports EMF export.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion transfers the drawing’s visible output, not its native CAD structure. Layers, blocks, associative dimensions, external references, hatch intelligence, constraints, and 3D objects may become ordinary EMF drawing commands or may be omitted, depending on the converter and the source content.

Because EMF is normally page-oriented, model-space content outside the selected plot area will not appear. Check the preview or output at 100% scale for clipped geometry, missing fonts, substituted symbols, incorrect lineweights, and altered hatch patterns. Use fonts installed on the conversion system, and convert critical text to geometry only when text editability is not required.

EMF is primarily a Windows interchange format. Applications on other platforms may import it with different support for fonts, transparency, clipping, line caps, and embedded raster images. Keep the original DWT or DWG for future CAD editing and treat the EMF as a presentation or publishing copy.
