Free online DWT to DXF converter

Many CAD, CAM, laser-cutting, and CNC applications accept DXF but cannot use an AutoCAD template directly. Saving the template as DXF makes its supported drawing data available for editing, exchange, or machine preparation.

What the DWT format is

DWT is the AutoCAD drawing template format. AutoCAD and compatible CAD programs use it to store reusable drawing standards such as layers, linetypes, text and dimension styles, blocks, units, layouts, page setups, title blocks, and sometimes starter geometry.

DWT files are used by CAD departments, contractors, manufacturers, and other organizations that need new drawings to follow consistent standards. A DWT is normally a template rather than a finished project file. Opening one usually creates a new drawing based on the template; the original template should not be overwritten during conversion.

What the DXF format is

DXF means Drawing Exchange Format. Autodesk developed it to transfer CAD data between AutoCAD and other applications. DXF can contain supported entities such as lines, arcs, circles, polylines, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, and drawing metadata.

DXF is useful when the recipient uses different CAD software or when a CAM, CNC, laser-cutting, GIS, or technical-illustration application specifically requires it. AutoCAD can write ASCII or binary DXF. ASCII DXF is generally the safer choice for compatibility because it can be inspected as text and is accepted by more older applications; binary DXF can be smaller and faster when the receiving software supports it.

Converting with AutoCAD

1. Make a backup copy of the original .dwt file.
2. Open AutoCAD and use File → Open to select the template. If AutoCAD creates a new drawing from it, work in that new drawing instead of saving over the template.
3. Check the drawing units, layer states, title block, layouts, page setups, blocks, and required geometry. Remove content that should not be sent to the recipient.
4. Choose File → Save As and select an AutoCAD DXF format from the file-type list. Select the DXF release required by the receiving application; older CAM and CNC programs may support only older releases.
5. Enter a new filename ending in .dxf, select the destination folder, and save.
6. If AutoCAD offers DXF export options, choose ASCII or binary according to the target program. Choose ASCII when compatibility is uncertain.
7. Open the exported file again in AutoCAD or in the destination program. Check scale, units, layer visibility, text, dimensions, blocks, curves, and model-space geometry.

Using the built-in online converter

Reopen the output in the target CAD or CAM application and verify the result, especially when the file contains custom AutoCAD objects or external references.

Compatibility limits

DXF is an exchange format, not a complete copy of every AutoCAD feature. Supported geometry, layers, blocks, styles, units, and some layout information can transfer, but proxy objects, custom objects, dynamic behavior, constraints, annotative features, fields, materials, and application-specific metadata may be simplified, discarded, or converted to basic entities.

A template containing only standards and no model geometry will produce a DXF with little or no drawing geometry. A downstream CAM or CNC application may ignore layouts and read only model space, or may require flattened polylines, a specific DXF release, and explicit millimeter or inch units.

External references, raster images, fonts, plotter configuration files, and other files linked by the template are not necessarily embedded in the DXF. Provide those dependencies separately when the recipient needs the same appearance or plotting behavior. Check the exported file in the actual receiving workflow rather than relying only on the .dxf extension.
