What the DWT format is
DWT is the AutoCAD drawing-template format. Autodesk AutoCAD creates and uses DWT files for reusable drawing standards, including units, layers, dimension styles, text styles, title blocks, layouts, page setups, plot styles, and sometimes sample geometry. You encounter them when starting a new DWG from a company or project template. BricsCAD, ZWCAD, and other DWG-compatible CAD applications may open some DWT files, but compatibility depends on proxy objects, custom fonts, plot-style tables, and version-specific features.
What the TIFF format is
TIFF is a raster image format commonly used for plotted CAD sheets, scanned plans, engineering archives, and print workflows. It supports high resolutions, lossless compression such as LZW and Deflate, grayscale or monochrome output, and large page dimensions. A TIFF contains pixels rather than CAD entities, so it does not retain layers, blocks, constraints, dimensions as editable objects, or the original model-space coordinates.
How to actually convert DWT to TIFF
Using AutoCAD and a PDF rasterization step
- Open the file in AutoCAD with File → Open and select the
.dwtfile. Save a working copy as.dwgwith File → Save As; this prevents changes to the template. - Select the required layout tab, or switch to model space if the template contains no configured sheet layout.
- Open Output → Page Setup Manager and set the paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, plot style table, and lineweight option. For a sheet layout, use 1:1 unless the drawing specification requires another scale.
- Use Output → Plot. Choose
AutoCAD PDF (General Documentation).pc3or another PDF plotter, enable Plot with plot styles and Plot object lineweights when required, then create the PDF. - Rasterize the PDF with a desktop tool such as ImageMagick. For a single-page grayscale TIFF at 300 DPI, use:
magick -density 300 input.pdf -alpha remove -colorspace Gray -compress LZW output.tif
Use a higher density, such as 600, for fine dimensions or small text. For a multipage PDF, write a numbered output pattern such as sheet-%03d.tif to create one TIFF per page.
Using the built-in online converter
You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the DWT, choose TIFF as the output format, start the conversion, and download the rendered file if the required layout, scale, and image settings are available in the converter.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
- A DWT can contain only standards and page settings, with no visible drawing geometry. In that case, the TIFF may be blank or contain only a title block.
- Each TIFF pixel represents rendered output; selecting the wrong paper size, plot area, or scale changes the apparent dimensions. Check a known dimension after conversion.
- Use monochrome or 8-bit grayscale for linework and LZW compression for compact, lossless files. Use RGB when colored layers or annotations must remain visible.
- CAD fonts, SHX fonts, external references, images, custom hatch patterns, and CTB/STB plot styles must be available to AutoCAD before plotting. Missing resources can alter text, lineweights, fills, or colors.
- The resulting TIFF is normally not a GeoTIFF and does not contain CAD coordinates or georeferencing metadata unless a separate GIS workflow adds them.
