A CAD template may need to become a JPG when a drawing must be previewed in a browser, attached to a document, or shared with software that cannot open AutoCAD files. JPG stores a rendered image rather than editable CAD geometry, layers, or template settings.
What the DWT format is
DWT is the AutoCAD Drawing Template format. AutoCAD uses it to store reusable drawing standards, including layers, dimension and text styles, layouts, title blocks, units, plotting settings, and sometimes sample geometry.
AutoCAD creates and uses DWT files when starting new drawings from a company or project standard. Common filenames include acad.dwt and custom templates such as site-plan.dwt. BricsCAD and some other DWG-compatible CAD applications can also use AutoCAD-compatible templates, but support for every template feature varies.
What the JPG format is
JPG is a compressed raster image format. It is suitable for drawing previews, email attachments, web pages, reports, and systems that accept images but not CAD files.
JPG files are widely supported and usually much smaller than a CAD drawing. They do not preserve vector geometry, selectable text, layers, blocks, line types, layouts, or editable dimensions. JPG compression can also blur thin lines and small annotations.
How to actually convert DWT to JPG
Using AutoCAD
- Open the
.dwtfile in AutoCAD. If AutoCAD treats it as a template for a new drawing, save the resulting drawing as.dwgbefore plotting. - Activate the model space or layout tab that should appear in the image.
- Run the
PLOTcommand, or choose Output → Plot. - For the printer or plotter, select
PublishToWeb JPG.pc3. Some AutoCAD installations provide similarly named JPG plotter configurations. - Choose the paper size and orientation. Set the plot area to Layout, Extents, or Window; use Window when only a defined part of the drawing should be exported.
- Set the scale. Use Fit to paper for a preview, or specify a scale when the image must represent a measured sheet.
- Enable Center the plot if required, select the intended plot style table, and preview the result.
- Confirm the plot, choose an output filename ending in
.jpg, and select the image resolution or quality in the JPG plotter properties when available.
For a quick conversion without installing CAD software, use the converter on 101convert.com: upload the DWT file, select JPG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the generated image.
Quality, compatibility, and limitations
Opening a template is not the same as exporting its internal CAD data. A DWT can contain styles and layouts that produce no visible marks, so the JPG may be blank or show only the template’s sample geometry. Check the correct model or layout tab before exporting.
Choose a higher raster resolution when the drawing contains fine linework or small labels. A low-resolution JPG is adequate for a thumbnail but can make dimensions unreadable. For technical drawings that must remain measurable or editable, retain the original DWT or save a DWG; JPG should be treated as a visual copy.
Plot style settings affect the result. A monochrome plot style produces black linework, while a color-dependent or named plot style can preserve drawing colors. Transparent objects, unsupported fonts, proxy objects, and certain custom AutoCAD elements may render differently in another CAD application or conversion engine.
