What the DWT format is

DWT is AutoCAD Drawing Template format. Autodesk AutoCAD and compatible CAD applications use it to store reusable drawing settings, including units, layers, dimension styles, text styles, layouts, title blocks, plot settings, and sometimes existing 2D geometry.

A DWT is normally used as the starting point for a new DWG drawing through New. You encounter it in company standards, architectural title-block packages, engineering drawing templates, and project-specific CAD setups. It is not an ordinary image file, so applications that only accept graphics formats cannot use its layers, dimensions, blocks, or drafting settings directly.

What the WMF format is

WMF, or Windows Metafile, is a Windows vector graphics format that stores drawing commands such as lines, curves, fills, and text. It is supported by many older Windows publishing, word-processing, diagramming, and presentation applications.

WMF is useful when CAD geometry must be inserted into a document as scalable artwork. Vector lines generally remain sharper than a bitmap when resized, and the format is suitable for simple 2D plans, diagrams, title blocks, and schematics. WMF is not a replacement for DWG or DWT: it does not preserve CAD layers, constraints, object intelligence, model history, or editable dimension entities.

How to actually convert DWT to WMF

Using AutoCAD

1. Open AutoCAD and create a drawing from the template through New, or open the DWT directly if the required template geometry must be exported. Creating a new drawing from the template avoids changing the original file.
2. Set the required view, layer visibility, and visual state. WMFOUT exports the selected drawing content as it appears in the current 2D view, so hide construction layers and unwanted annotations before exporting.
3. Run the AutoCAD command WMFOUT.
4. Select the objects to export and press Enter.
5. Enter an output filename ending in .wmf, then confirm the save location.
6. Open the resulting WMF in the target Windows application and check line weights, text, hatches, and scale. Import settings such as paste size or printer units may affect the displayed dimensions.

If the template contains only standards and no geometry, WMFOUT has nothing meaningful to export. In that case, open a drawing created from the DWT, or add the required title block and drawing objects before running the command.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• The conversion produces graphics, not a CAD-editable drawing. Layers, blocks, object data, constraints, model-space relationships, and dimension intelligence are discarded.
• WMF is primarily a 2D interchange format. Three-dimensional AutoCAD content is normally exported as the current projected view rather than as editable 3D geometry.
• Fonts that are unavailable on the target computer may be substituted, changing text width and alignment. Convert text to outlines only if the target workflow requires fixed appearance and can accept non-editable text.
• Hatches, clipped viewports, transparency, proxy objects, custom line types, and some AutoCAD-specific visual effects may export differently or be omitted.
• WMF does not provide a reliable CAD-scale workflow by itself. Verify the imported size against a known dimension, especially when placing the file in a page-layout or office application.
• For modern graphics software, SVG, PDF, or DXF may be a better interchange choice, but WMF is appropriate when the receiving application specifically requires Windows Metafile input.
