What the DWT format is
DWT is the AutoCAD drawing template format created by Autodesk AutoCAD and compatible CAD applications. Templates store reusable drawing settings such as layers, dimension and text styles, layouts, title blocks, units, page setups, blocks, and sometimes sample geometry.
You encounter DWT files when starting a standardized drawing with File → New. A template may contain no visible geometry, so converting an empty DWT can produce a blank image. If the file contains drawing content, AutoCAD normally creates a new DWG from it rather than treating the DWT as the finished drawing.
What the WEBP format is
WEBP is a raster image format designed for web and application use. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation; a static CAD export generally uses lossy or lossless compression without animation.
WEBP is suitable for website previews, email attachments, documentation, and thumbnails because it is usually smaller than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality. It does not retain CAD layers, blocks, vector geometry, object properties, units, or editability.
How to convert DWT to WEBP
Using the online converter
- Open the DWT-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com; no software installation is required.
- Upload the
.dwtfile and selectWEBPas the output format. - Start the conversion and download the resulting image.
This method renders the template into pixels. Review the output for missing geometry, incorrect line weights, or an unsuitable page area before using it in documentation.
Using AutoCAD and an image converter
- Open the DWT in AutoCAD. If it is a template containing reusable settings, create a drawing from it with File → Save As and save a working copy as
drawing.dwg. - Select the model or layout tab that should appear in the image, then configure paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, lineweights, and background in Output → Plot.
- Choose
PublishToWeb PNG.pc3as the plotter. Set the required resolution and export the result asdrawing.png. PNG is preferable to JPEG as an intermediate because thin CAD lines and text remain sharper. - Convert the raster export with ImageMagick:
magick drawing.png -quality 85 drawing.webp
For lossless WEBP output, use:
magick drawing.png -define webp:lossless=true drawing.webp
If AutoCAD only produces a PDF in the required workflow, rasterize it before creating WEBP:
magick -density 300 drawing.pdf -background white -alpha remove -quality 85 drawing.webp
Quality and limitations
The conversion is a rendering process, not a CAD-format conversion: the WEBP contains only a bitmap of the selected view or page. Choose a sufficiently large plot resolution, usually 200–300 DPI for readable technical text, and inspect thin lines at the final display size.
Lossy WEBP compression can introduce halos around fine linework and small labels. Use lossless WEBP for drawings with dense hatching, tiny text, or strict visual fidelity. A white plot background improves compatibility; transparent backgrounds may not display consistently in older CAD documentation tools and viewers.
Keep the original DWT or resulting DWG for editing and measurement. The WEBP cannot be converted back into accurate CAD geometry, layers, dimensions, or blocks.
