Free online DWG to WEBP converter

CAD drawings often need to be shown in websites, documentation, previews, or messaging systems that accept images but not native DWG files. Converting the drawing to WEBP creates a compact raster image for viewing and sharing, but it removes CAD editing and measurement data.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a native CAD drawing format developed by Autodesk and used for 2D drafting, 3D models, layouts, dimensions, layers, blocks, and metadata. AutoCAD creates DWG files, and applications such as DraftSight, BricsCAD, ZWCAD, and other compatible CAD programs can open or save them.

You commonly encounter DWG files in architectural plans, mechanical drawings, civil-engineering documentation, surveying projects, and files exchanged between design offices. A DWG stores vector geometry and CAD-specific structure, so it can be edited and plotted at different scales without the quality loss associated with ordinary images.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format intended for web and general image delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation; for a static CAD preview, lossy or lossless WEBP is normally sufficient.

WEBP usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality, making it useful for browser previews, technical-documentation pages, email attachments, and image-based archives. It stores pixels rather than lines, layers, dimensions, or model objects, so it is not a replacement for the source DWG.

How to convert DWG to WEBP

Using AutoCAD and ImageMagick

1. Open the DWG in AutoCAD and activate the required model view or layout. For a multi-sheet drawing, export each layout separately.
2. Set the visible layers, lineweights, background, and drawing extents. Use a sufficiently large output size; small exports can make dimensions and fine linework unreadable.
3. Run AutoCAD's EXPORTPNG command, or use the PNG plotter through Output → Plot. Choose the required window or layout, output dimensions or DPI, and transparent or solid background.
4. Convert the resulting PNG to WEBP with ImageMagick:

Use -define webp:lossless=true when exact pixel preservation is more important than file size. For line drawings, lossless WEBP or a high lossy quality setting generally preserves thin lines and text better.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Conversion renders the selected view, not necessarily the entire drawing database. Hidden layers, layouts, external references, proxy objects, and unsupported fonts can change the appearance.
• Choose output dimensions based on the intended use. A 1920-pixel-wide export is suitable for many screen previews, while printed plans require a much larger raster or should remain PDF or DWG.
• Lossy compression can create halos around thin black lines and small text. Use lossless WEBP when the image contains dense linework, or retain the exported PNG as an archival intermediate.
• WEBP support is widespread in current browsers and image applications, but some older CAD, publishing, and print workflows accept PNG or JPEG only. Keep a compatible alternate image when required.
