A receiving CAD, CNC, inspection, or product-development system may require a STEP model instead of an AutoCAD drawing. Conversion is useful for transferring existing 3D geometry, but a 2D DWG cannot become an accurate 3D model without additional modeling.
What the DWG format is
DWG is Autodesk’s native format for AutoCAD drawings and is also used by compatible applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD. It can contain lines, arcs, annotations, blocks, layers, dimensions, meshes, surfaces, and 3D ACIS solids. DWG files are common in architectural, mechanical, civil-engineering, and consultant workflows.
The source may contain only 2D drafting entities or genuine 3D bodies. This distinction determines whether export to STEP produces a useful solid model. Text, dimensions, hatches, paper-space layouts, constraints, and most AutoCAD-specific metadata do not have direct equivalents in a STEP model.
What the STP format is
STP and STEP are filename extensions for ISO 10303, a neutral CAD exchange format used by mechanical CAD, CAM, inspection, and PLM systems. STEP can represent solid and trimmed-surface geometry, assemblies, colors, and, depending on the application protocol and exporter, product structure and metadata.
STEP is appropriate when the recipient needs editable boundary-representation geometry rather than an AutoCAD drawing database. AP203 provides basic geometry and configuration information; AP214 and AP242 generally support richer mechanical product, color, and structure data. The receiving system may support only some protocols, so use the option specified by its documentation.
How to convert the file
Direct export with CAD Exchanger
CAD Exchanger Desktop is suitable when the DWG already contains importable 3D solids or surfaces.
- Make a copy of the DWG and open the copy in CAD Exchanger Desktop.
- Inspect the model tree and viewport to confirm that 3D bodies or surfaces were imported; do not assume that visible 2D layers represent a solid.
- Check the source units and remove unwanted annotations, title blocks, construction geometry, and layers.
- Choose File → Save As or the equivalent export command and select
STEP (*.stp, *.step). - Select the STEP protocol supported by the destination, if the exporter provides that choice, then save the file.
- Open the result in the receiving CAD application and check scale, body count, solid status, and geometry integrity.
CAD Exchanger Cloud can handle non-confidential files without a desktop installation. Upload the DWG, choose STEP as the output, download the result, and validate it locally. Do not send proprietary designs to an online service unless its security, retention, and processing terms meet your requirements.
Export through Rhino
Rhino is useful when the imported DWG needs layer cleanup, surface inspection, or repair before STEP export.
- Open the DWG with File → Open and select the correct import units.
- Remove 2D drafting objects and unwanted layers, then select the required solids or surfaces.
- Use Rhino’s edge-display tools to find naked edges. Join compatible surfaces and repair gaps where appropriate; do not close a gap by changing dimensions without checking the design.
- Choose File → Export Selected, select
STEP (*.stp; *.step), and choose the required protocol if available. - Reopen the exported file in the target CAD system and compare dimensions, body count, and solid status with the DWG.
Use a native CAD system for a 3D DWG
For a 3D DWG containing AutoCAD ACIS solids, a reliable alternative is to export the solids to an ACIS file first, then use a solid-modeling application such as Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Creo, or another system that imports SAT and exports STEP.
- In AutoCAD, isolate the required 3D solids and use the
ACISOUTcommand to write an.satfile, if the objects are supported ACIS solids. - Import the SAT file into the destination CAD system and confirm its units and geometry.
- Use that application’s STEP export command, normally under File → Save As or File → Export.
- Select the protocol and assembly options required by the receiving system, then validate the exported STEP file.
AutoCAD is primarily a DWG authoring application and should not be treated as a universal direct STEP exporter. SolidWorks and similar systems can export STEP after obtaining valid 3D geometry, but importing a 2D DWG does not create a 3D part automatically.
Quality and compatibility limits
- A 2D DWG cannot be converted into an accurate 3D STEP model automatically. A converter may transfer planar curves, but it cannot infer thickness, depth, holes, bends, or design intent from a floor plan or 2D mechanical drawing. Rebuild or model the part when no 3D bodies exist.
- Proxy objects, custom objects, meshes, blocks, external references, and unsupported surfaces may import incompletely. Resolve or convert unsupported objects in the source application only after confirming that the required geometry is preserved.
- Set units explicitly. DWG commonly depends on drawing settings and user interpretation, whereas STEP stores a unit context. Opening a millimeter model as inches changes its apparent size by a factor of 25.4.
- STEP normally transfers geometry rather than AutoCAD layers, annotative objects, constraints, parametric history, or paper-space layouts. An assembly may arrive as separate bodies if the exporter does not preserve product structure.
- After export, compare bounding-box dimensions, hole diameters, body count, face gaps, and—when applicable—mass properties. A file that opens successfully is not necessarily watertight, dimensionally correct, or suitable for machining.
