A PLN file is needed when a DWG drawing must be brought into an Archicad project for coordination, documentation, or BIM remodeling. The conversion is performed in Archicad because general-purpose online converters do not create valid native PLN projects.
What the DWG format is
DWG is a proprietary CAD drawing format associated with Autodesk AutoCAD and used for architectural, engineering, surveying, civil, and manufacturing drawings. Applications including AutoCAD, Civil 3D, BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD can create or edit DWG files.
A DWG may contain model space, paper-space layouts, layers, blocks, external references, dimensions, text, hatches, proxy objects, and 2D or 3D entities. The file may come from an architect, consultant, surveyor, contractor, or CAD archive.
What the PLN format is
PLN is Archicad's native project format. It stores an Archicad building model together with project settings, stories, views, layouts, layers, attributes, documentation, and native elements such as walls, slabs, roofs, doors, windows, and objects.
Converting a DWG to PLN does not turn CAD linework into intelligent Archicad elements. Imported lines, arcs, hatches, and text remain drawing content unless the user manually rebuilds them as native walls, slabs, doors, windows, zones, or other BIM components.
How to convert DWG to PLN
- Prepare the DWG. Open it in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another compatible CAD application. Remove irrelevant layouts and geometry, purge unused data, confirm drawing units, and provide every required external reference and font. Missing references should be bound or delivered with the DWG package when appropriate.
- Create the Archicad project. Start Archicad, create a new project from the required template, and set the measurement system, stories, origin, and project settings before importing the drawing.
- Import the CAD file. Use the DWG merge or import command, commonly found under File → Interoperability → Merge; the exact menu name varies by Archicad version. Select
drawing.dwg, choose a suitable DWG translator, and verify units, layer conversion, pen mapping, block handling, text settings, and insertion position. - Choose the appropriate import method. Use a placed 2D Drawing or an attached external reference when the DWG is only a background or coordination reference. Merge the geometry when editable 2D linework is required. Avoid exploding content unnecessarily because it can increase file size and make layer management harder.
- Check the result. Verify one or more known dimensions, the project origin, rotation, layer visibility, line weights, text, hatches, and drawing position. Correct unit settings before continuing if the scale is wrong.
- Remodel when BIM data is required. Trace the imported plan with Archicad's native walls, slabs, roofs, openings, doors, windows, zones, and other tools. This manual step is necessary when the recipient needs an editable Archicad building model rather than imported CAD graphics.
- Save the project. Use File → Save As and save the result as
project.pln. Keep the source DWG, translator settings, and any external references with the project. Confirm that the recipient uses a compatible Archicad version because PLN files are version-specific.
Online and desktop tools
Graphisoft Archicad is the appropriate desktop application for creating a PLN file from DWG. AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD are useful for cleaning and checking the source drawing before import.
Online services such as CloudConvert or Convertio can be useful for producing a quick PDF, SVG, or image preview from a DWG, but they do not produce a native, editable PLN project. Autodesk Viewer can inspect many DWG files in a browser, but it is a viewer rather than a DWG-to-PLN converter. Do not upload confidential project drawings to an online service without checking its retention and privacy terms.
Quality and compatibility limitations
Import results depend on the DWG translator, source-file structure, units, and supported entity types. Unavailable SHX or TrueType fonts, missing Xrefs, proxy objects, custom entities, annotative scales, unsupported 3D objects, and nonstandard hatch patterns can be omitted or displayed differently.
Archicad can preserve CAD content as reference or 2D geometry, but it cannot reliably infer design intent, BIM classifications, wall construction, openings, or relationships from ordinary DWG linework. If a structured model already exists, IFC is usually a more suitable exchange format than rebuilding BIM content from DWG.
