What the DWG format is
.dwg is a CAD drawing format associated with Autodesk AutoCAD and supported by many architecture, engineering, manufacturing, mapping, and surveying applications. It can store 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, layouts, annotation styles, and references to external files.
AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Mechanical, Map 3D, and compatible CAD programs create and edit DWG files. DWG is intended to remain an editable design database, so its appearance can change when the required fonts, plot styles, external references, custom line types, or proxy-object support are missing.
What the PDF format is
.pdf is a page-oriented document format that can preserve paper size, drawing position, vector lines, raster images, text, and fonts across operating systems. It is suitable for printed plans, approval copies, construction documents, email attachments, and controlled distribution.
A CAD-exported PDF can retain vector geometry, selectable or searchable text, layers, and hyperlinks when the application and export settings support them. It normally does not preserve the editable CAD feature structure, parametric relationships, complete 3D model data, or native layer and object behavior. Use PDF/A when a standards-based archival file is specifically required.
How to convert DWG to PDF
Using AutoCAD
- Open the DWG and confirm that fonts, external references, images, custom line types, and proxy objects load correctly.
- Open the required layout, or create a page setup with the intended paper size, orientation, margins, plot area, and scale. Use the layout's existing scale when the drawing must remain measurable.
- For a plotted sheet, choose Output → Plot and select
DWG To PDF.pc3as the printer or plotter. You can also use Output → Export to PDF or enterEXPORTPDF. - Apply the required CTB or STB plot style, lineweights, colors, screening, transparency, and layer-information options. Select vector output for normal line drawings and configure raster quality for embedded images.
- Preview the page, check the title block, orientation, margins, lineweights, text, and scale, then choose the output filename and save the PDF.
For multiple sheets, use Output → Publish, add the required layouts, select DWG To PDF.pc3, and publish a multi-page PDF. A saved page setup helps keep repeated exports consistent.
Using Autodesk DWG TrueView
Autodesk DWG TrueView can open, plot, and publish DWG files on supported Windows systems without full AutoCAD. Open the drawing, choose Output → Plot, select DWG To PDF.pc3, set the paper and scale, preview the sheet, and save the PDF. TrueView is primarily a viewing and plotting application; editing and some publishing features require a full CAD program.

Quality and compatibility checks
- Do not use Fit to paper when an engineering scale is required. It may make the drawing fit visually while changing its intended scale; use the correct layout, viewport scale, and paper size instead.
- Install the required SHX, TrueType, and OpenType fonts before plotting. Missing fonts can change text width, wrapping, alignment, and annotation placement. TrueType fonts are more commonly embedded in PDFs; SHX handling depends on the CAD exporter.
- Make sure external references and images are found and loaded before export. An unavailable reference can produce blank, incomplete, or incorrectly positioned areas.
- Check CTB or STB settings because monochrome output, screening, transparency, and lineweight assignments can substantially change the printed result.
- Prefer vector output for CAD linework. Rasterized pages can blur fine lines and text, while very complex vector drawings may create large PDFs or render slowly.
- Verify DWG version and object compatibility when opening the file in another CAD application. Unsupported proxy objects or newer entities may be displayed incompletely even before conversion.
- Keep the original DWG. A PDF is normally a distribution or plotting copy, not a replacement for the source required for later editing, layer control, accurate measurement, or design-data extraction.
