PCB viewers, document-control systems, and print workflows often accept PDF but not Gerber manufacturing data. Rendering Gerber layers to PDF provides a readable board drawing for review, documentation, or scale-checked printing without replacing the fabrication files.
What a GBR file contains
GBR is an ambiguous file extension. In PCB work, it usually means a Gerber RS-274X or Gerber X2 file containing artwork for one board layer: copper, solder mask, silkscreen, paste, or board outline. KiCad, Altium Designer, Autodesk EAGLE, Cadence Allegro, and other PCB tools generate Gerber files for board fabrication.
A fabrication package normally contains multiple files, such as board-F_Cu.gbr, board-B_Cu.gbr, board-F_Silkscreen.gbr, and board-Edge_Cuts.gbr. Drill positions are usually stored separately in Excellon files such as board-PTH.drl; a Gerber layer alone generally does not show drilled holes.
The .gbr extension can also identify a GIMP brush file. A PCB Gerber file is normally readable ASCII text and commonly includes records such as G04, %FSLAX, or %MOMM; a GIMP brush is a binary raster file. Use a Gerber viewer only for PCB Gerber data.
Why use PDF
PDF provides a fixed-layout page that can be opened, printed, attached to a review record, and archived without PCB-specific software. Gerber-aware exporters can produce vector PDF output, keeping tracks, pads, and text sharp when zoomed or printed.
A PDF is not fabrication data. Send the original Gerber files, drill files, layer stackup, and manufacturing notes to the board fabricator. A combined PDF is only a visual representation and does not preserve layer, aperture, drill, or net information for manufacturing or editing.
Convert PCB Gerber files with KiCad GerbView
KiCad's free GerbView utility is a practical desktop option because it interprets Gerber and Excellon data rather than converting the file as a generic image.
- Open GerbView and load the required
.gbrfiles. Load copper, silkscreen, solder-mask, and outline layers as needed for the intended drawing. - Load matching
.drldrill files if holes or slots must appear in the PDF. - Set layer visibility, draw order, and colors. For a review drawing, show only relevant layers and include the board outline.
- Check orientation, dimensions, and bottom-layer mirroring. Mirror a bottom layer only when the PDF must represent the board viewed from its underside.
- Use File → Export → PDF. Select the visible content, paper size, and scale, then save the output. Use 1:1 scale for a physical print reference.
KiCad menu wording can vary by release. If the installed version does not provide PDF export, use its print function and select a system PDF printer, then verify the resulting page scale.
Convert with gerbv or an online service
gerbv is a suitable free command-line Gerber viewer and exporter. Export one layer with:
gerbv -x pdf -o layer.pdf layer.gbr
Pass several files to make a visual composite:
gerbv -x pdf -o board-view.pdf board-F_Cu.gbr board-F_Silkscreen.gbr board-Edge_Cuts.gbr
For occasional, non-confidential conversions, Aspose.CAD's online converter supports Gerber-to-PDF output. Upload only files permitted by the service's retention and confidentiality terms, and inspect the downloaded PDF locally. Unreleased layouts, customer designs, and complete fabrication packages are better processed with desktop software.
Convert a GIMP brush GBR file
Open the brush in GIMP, confirm that the rendered image is correct, then use File → Export As and save it as brush.pdf. The resulting PDF contains a raster rendering of the brush; brush spacing, dynamics, and other painting behavior are not preserved.
Quality and compatibility checks
Use Gerber-aware software for PCB files. Generic raster converters may mishandle aperture macros, polarity clearances, filled regions, or fine geometry, and they cannot add drill data that was not loaded.
Inspect the PDF at high zoom for missing pads, clipped edges, reversed text, incorrect colors, and accidental mirroring. For dimensionally accurate printing, export at 1:1 and disable PDF-reader options such as Fit, Scale to fit, or Shrink oversized pages.
Keep the original .gbr, .drl, job file, and fabrication documentation with the PDF. A multi-layer PDF is a flattened visual composite, not an editable PCB design or a replacement for the source manufacturing package.

Frequently asked questions
Is the GBR to PDF converter free?
Yes, converting GBR to PDF on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.
How large can my GBR file be?
You can upload GBR files up to 50 MB and convert up to 20 files at once in a single batch.
What happens to my uploaded files?
Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.
Do I need to install any software to convert GBR to PDF?
No. The GBR to PDF conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.
Did the conversion fail?
In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid GBR file for this GBR to PDF conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.
Will a GBR Gerber file keep its PCB layers in PDF?
A PDF can preserve the visible geometry of a Gerber layer, but it may flatten separate PCB layers into a single rendered page. Layer names, apertures, polarity, and manufacturing attributes are not reliably preserved as editable PCB data.
Will drill holes be included when converting GBR to PDF?
Only drill information present in the source conversion can appear in the PDF; drill files are commonly supplied separately from Gerber artwork files. If the drill file is not included, the PDF may show the board artwork without hole locations.
Does GBR to PDF keep the correct PCB dimensions and scale?
It can, provided the Gerber units, coordinate format, and scaling settings are interpreted correctly. Check a known board dimension afterward, because an incorrect unit or scaling setting can make the entire PDF appear accurate while being the wrong physical size.
Why does my converted Gerber PDF look mirrored, missing, or filled in?
This usually happens when a layer's polarity, mirroring, aperture definitions, or Gerber format settings are interpreted incorrectly. Negative solder-mask or plane layers can look solid or blank unless those source properties are handled correctly.
