Convert DWG to TCW

A TurboCAD workflow may require a native .tcw drawing instead of an AutoCAD .dwg file for continued editing. The conversion is normally done locally in TurboCAD because TCW support is uncommon among online file-conversion services.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a proprietary binary CAD format used for 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, layouts, and related design data. AutoCAD creates DWG files, and applications including BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD, and other CAD systems can read or write them. Architectural, mechanical, civil-engineering, and manufacturing drawings are commonly distributed as DWG files.

What the TCW format is

TCW is the native drawing format associated with IMSI Design TurboCAD. It is intended for continued editing in TurboCAD and can store TurboCAD-specific drawing structure, settings, and objects more appropriately than a neutral exchange format. Saving an imported DWG as TCW does not guarantee preservation of every AutoCAD-specific object; it stores the result of TurboCAD's import process.

How to convert DWG to TCW

1. Make a working copy of the DWG. Gather its external references, raster images, SHX or TrueType fonts, and CTB/STB plot-style files.
2. Open a TurboCAD edition that supports DWG import on your operating system, then choose File → Open and select the DWG.
3. Review the import settings, if displayed. Check drawing units, model space or paper space, layer handling, font substitution, proxy objects, and external-reference paths.
4. Inspect the imported drawing for scale, text, dimensions, blocks, hatches, lineweights, layouts, and missing references.
5. Choose File → Save As, select the TurboCAD Drawing format or the .tcw extension, and save the file.
6. Close and reopen the TCW file, then verify that the required geometry and objects remain editable.

If TurboCAD cannot open the source DWG version, use AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or the free ODA File Converter to resave it as an older compatible DWG version or as DXF. ODA File Converter changes DWG and DXF versions; it does not create TCW files. The converted source must still be opened and saved in TurboCAD.

Quality and compatibility limits

This is an import between different CAD object models, not a lossless extension change. Proxy and AEC objects, dynamic blocks, parametric constraints, annotative content, associative dimensions, materials, and specialized 3D features may be simplified, decomposed into basic geometry, or omitted.

Missing fonts can alter text width, wrapping, and placement. External references and images may remain linked to their original paths instead of being embedded. Confirm units and scale after import, particularly when the DWG uses unitless coordinates. If plotting must match the source, compare a PDF or printed output from the original DWG with output generated from the TCW file.

Online conversion options

TCW is not a commonly supported output format on general online converters, so services such as generic DWG conversion sites should not be assumed to produce a valid TCW file. Use TurboCAD locally for proprietary drawings. If an online provider explicitly lists both the required DWG input and TCW output versions, test it with a copy and verify the result in TurboCAD; uploading confidential CAD data also requires checking the provider's retention and security terms.
