How to convert dwg to step file

A mechanical CAD, CNC, inspection, or PLM system may require STEP when the supplied design is a DWG. Conversion is direct only when the DWG contains usable 3D solids or surfaces; a 2D drafting file must be remodeled before it can produce a meaningful STEP model.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native binary CAD format associated with AutoCAD and is also created by BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD, IntelliCAD-based applications, and many architectural, civil, and plant-design systems. It can contain 2D lines, arcs, dimensions, blocks, and text, as well as 3D meshes, surfaces, and ACIS-based solids.

DWG is common in architectural plans, manufacturing drawings, civil layouts, and legacy CAD archives. Inspect part.dwg in a 3D view before converting: its extension does not indicate whether it contains a 2D drawing or a 3D model.

What the STEP format is

STEP is an ISO 10303 exchange format for transferring product data between mechanical CAD systems. Files normally use .step or .stp. AP203 and AP214 remain widely supported, while AP242 is a newer option when both applications support it.

STEP represents precise boundary-representation geometry, including solids, faces, edges, and surfaces, and is commonly used for supplier exchange, machining, inspection, engineering review, and downstream CAD editing. It usually does not preserve DWG-specific features such as layers, blocks, dimensions, title blocks, annotative text, paper-space layouts, or native feature history.

How to convert a 3D DWG

  1. Open the file in BricsCAD Mechanical or another CAD application that can read the DWG's 3D solids. Standard AutoCAD does not provide a general native DWG-to-STEP export workflow.
  2. Inspect the model in shaded 3D view. Remove construction objects and confirm that each intended part is a closed, valid solid rather than loose surfaces or a mesh. Run the application's audit, repair, or geometry-validation command.
  3. Use File → Export or the application's STEP export command. Choose .step or .stp, select AP214 or AP242 when supported, and export the required bodies or assembly.
  4. Open the STEP file in the receiving CAD system and check units, body count, holes, curved faces, gaps, and assembly placement before manufacturing or further editing.

Rhino 3D is another desktop option for compatible DWG curves, surfaces, and solids. Import the DWG with File → Import, repair or join the geometry, select the required objects, then use File → Export Selected and choose STEP. Rhino is useful for surface-based models, but it does not infer a 3D mechanical model from 2D drafting.

How to convert a 2D DWG

  1. Open the drawing in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another DWG-compatible application. Isolate the profiles required for the part and remove dimensions, hatches, duplicate lines, and text.
  2. Export the cleaned profile as DXF if the target modeler imports DXF more reliably. Preserve the drawing units and make every sketch contour closed.
  3. Import the profile into a parametric modeler such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Fusion, or FreeCAD. Constrain and repair the sketch, then define the missing design intent with extrusions, revolutions, cuts, fillets, and other features.
  4. Use File → Export or the application's STEP command to export the modeled body or assembly as part.step. Exporting the original 2D drawing does not create depth or topology.

FreeCAD is a low-cost desktop route, but DWG import may require the separate ODA File Converter or a DXF intermediary. After importing, create or repair the solid in Part or Part Design, then use File → Export and select STEP.

Online conversion

CAD Exchanger Cloud can convert supported DWG files to STEP through a browser. Upload the file, choose STEP and an available protocol, download the result, and validate it in a desktop CAD application. Confirm that the service recognizes the DWG as 3D geometry; a 2D drawing cannot be made into a correct 3D part by an automated converter.

Do not upload confidential, export-controlled, or supplier-restricted designs unless the service's storage and processing terms meet the applicable requirements. Generic document-conversion websites are unsuitable for this task because they may extract only 2D content or rename the file without generating valid STEP topology.

Quality and compatibility checks

  • A 2D DWG does not specify thickness, depth, feature history, material, or assembly structure. These must be supplied during remodeling.
  • STEP normally transfers geometry, not parametric history, constraints, layers, blocks, dimensions, or DWG annotations.
  • Check units explicitly. DWG relies on drawing-unit settings such as INSUNITS, while STEP records units. A millimeter-to-inch error changes scale by 25.4.
  • Meshes, open surfaces, self-intersections, tiny gaps, and invalid ACIS solids can fail during export. Heal surfaces or remodel defective regions before producing STEP.
  • An assembly may arrive as separate bodies without mates, names, colors, or a usable assembly hierarchy. Verify the structure in the receiving system.

Frequently asked questions

Is the DWG to STEP converter free?

Yes, converting DWG to STEP on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my DWG file be?

You can upload DWG files up to 500 MB and convert up to 20 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert DWG to STEP?

No. The DWG to STEP conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid DWG file for this DWG to STEP conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Can a 2D DWG be converted directly to STEP?

No, a 2D DWG cannot produce a useful 3D STEP model without first being remodeled or given 3D geometry. Lines, dimensions, text, and hatches do not automatically become solid parts.

Will my DWG layers and drawing annotations be preserved in STEP?

Usually not; STEP is intended for 3D CAD geometry, so DWG layers, dimensions, text, hatches, and layout information may be discarded or only partially mapped. The resulting model is generally editable as geometry, but it does not retain the original DWG drafting structure or parametric history.

What happens to 3D solids and surfaces when converting DWG to STEP?

Supported 3D solids and surfaces are translated into STEP model geometry, but the original construction history and some DWG-specific entities are flattened. Conversion tolerance and unit settings matter because unsuitable values can create inaccurate edges, gaps, or invalid solids.

Why is my STEP file empty or missing parts after converting a DWG?

This usually happens because the DWG contains only 2D drafting objects, unsupported proxy or mesh entities, or geometry that is hidden or excluded from the export. STEP needs recognized 3D solid or surface geometry, so missing parts may need to be rebuilt or converted before export.
