Convert DWG to XLS

A recipient may require a legacy Excel workbook for a schedule, quantity check, asset register, or document-management system. Converting a DWG to XLS therefore means extracting drawing data into spreadsheet columns, not turning the CAD geometry into an editable Excel drawing.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native binary drawing format associated with Autodesk AutoCAD and supported by CAD applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD. It can store geometry, layers, blocks, text, dimensions, layouts, block attributes, and object-specific metadata used in building plans, maps, manufacturing drawings, and plant designs.

A DWG is not necessarily a table. Useful spreadsheet output usually comes from block attributes, object properties, layer data, coordinates, lengths, areas, or existing AutoCAD table objects. A drawing may contain no structured data suitable for extraction.

What the XLS format is

XLS is the legacy binary workbook format used by Microsoft Excel 97–2003. It supports worksheets, formulas, formatting, and charts, but has a limit of 65,536 rows and 256 columns per worksheet. XLS is appropriate when an older application or customer workflow rejects .xlsx; use XLSX for larger results and newer Excel features whenever the receiving system permits it.

How to extract DWG data to XLS

Using AutoCAD data extraction

1. Open the drawing in a full AutoCAD installation and run DATAEXTRACTION.
2. Choose Create a new data extraction, save the extraction definition, and select the current drawing or additional DWG files.
3. Filter the object types and layers to include. Common choices are blocks, block references, attributes, polylines, dimensions, and other objects with useful properties.
4. Select the required fields, such as block name, attribute values, layer, insertion coordinates, object type, length, area, and rotation. Use the option to combine identical rows only when duplicate records should be aggregated.
5. Preview the result and choose an external file output. Depending on the AutoCAD release, the wizard may offer XLSX, CSV, or other formats; do not assume that an XLS option is available.
6. If the result is CSV or XLSX, open it in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc and use File → Save As to select Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls). Do not rename the extension manually.

If the drawing contains an actual AutoCAD table, run TABLEEXPORT to write its cell data to CSV, then open the CSV and save it as XLS. This preserves table values more directly than extracting unrelated drawing objects.

Using other CAD software

BricsCAD and some other full CAD applications provide data-extraction, block-attribute, or table-export commands. Their commands and output formats vary by edition, so export to CSV when direct XLS output is unavailable, then convert the CSV locally with Excel or LibreOffice Calc.

Online CAD converters generally produce PDF, DXF, SVG, raster images, or other CAD formats; they usually do not map DWG properties into spreadsheet columns. For a two-stage online workflow, a reputable spreadsheet service such as CloudConvert may convert an already extracted CSV to XLS if its current format list supports both formats, but it cannot replace CAD data extraction. Do not upload confidential drawings or extracted data unless the service meets the required security and retention policy.

Quality and compatibility limitations

The workbook contains selected attributes and properties, not an editable CAD drawing. Geometry may be reduced to coordinates, lengths, areas, counts, or bounding-box values. Text inside blocks, dynamic-block parameters, proxy objects, custom object data, nested blocks, and objects supplied by vertical CAD products may need separate testing.

Check the drawing units before exporting coordinates, lengths, and areas. DWG units can be unitless, metric, imperial, or custom, and an extraction does not automatically make ambiguous units meaningful.

Load required external references before extraction. Objects in unloaded or missing XREF files are not available to the extraction, and data from a referenced drawing may need to be exported separately.

After creating XLS, verify row and column limits, character encoding, dates, formulas, decimal separators, duplicate handling, and numeric precision. Use .xlsx instead when the receiving system accepts it.
