How to convert dwg to dwfx file

DWG files are converted to DWFX when a project team needs to distribute plotted sheets for review, measurement, or markup without handing out the editable CAD database. DWFX also provides an Autodesk-oriented package that recipients can open with Design Review or compatible viewers.

What the DWG format is

DWG is Autodesk’s native CAD database format for 2D drawings and 3D models. It can store geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, layouts, view settings, metadata, and design data used by related applications. AutoCAD creates and edits DWG files; AutoCAD LT, Civil 3D, Map 3D, Plant 3D, and many third-party CAD programs can also read or write them. DWG is common in architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, surveying, and infrastructure workflows.

What the DWFX format is

DWFX is Autodesk’s Design Web Format based on the XML Paper Specification (XPS) container. It is a published delivery format for drawing sheets and design reviews, not an editable replacement for DWG. Depending on the publishing settings, it can contain multiple sheets, vector linework, raster images, layer information, hyperlinks, and review or markup data.

Autodesk Design Review provides the most complete viewing and markup support. Compatible XPS viewers may render basic DWFX content, but they may not support DWF-specific layers, measurements, 3D content, or review features. A published file can be inspected, measured, printed, and marked up without exposing the original DWG database. Its size may be smaller than the source drawing, but publishing does not guarantee a smaller file.

How to convert DWG to DWFX

Autodesk AutoCAD is the most dependable option because it controls layouts, page settings, plot styles, references, and sheet publishing. Supported AutoCAD LT releases and Autodesk DWG TrueView releases that include DWFx publishing can also create the format, although TrueView provides fewer editing and publishing controls.

  1. Open the DWG in AutoCAD and resolve missing fonts, external references, raster images, proxy objects, and other warnings before publishing.
  2. For several sheets, open Output → Publish or run PUBLISH. For one layout, use Output → Export → DWFx if that command is present, or use File → Plot.
  3. Select the layouts to publish and remove model-space or sheet entries that should not be included. Check paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, viewport settings, and the assigned plot style for every sheet.
  4. In the publish or plot settings, choose a DWFx output device. Depending on the release, this appears as a DWFx option or the DWFx ePlot.pc3 configuration.
  5. Choose a single multi-sheet file or separate files, select the output folder, and publish. Open the result in Autodesk Design Review and inspect every sheet before distribution.

Publishing is preferable to plotting each layout separately when the deliverable must contain a controlled, ordered sheet set. The exact menu names and available DWFx device depend on the Autodesk product and release.

Quality and compatibility limits

DWFX is a published representation: changes made in a viewer or markup application do not modify the source DWG. Check lineweights, colors, transparency, hatch patterns, clipping boundaries, fonts, raster images, hyperlinks, and external references in the published file. Plot styles, including .ctb and .stb, directly affect the output appearance.

Published geometry does not retain native CAD behavior such as parametric relationships, constraints, feature history, or full object editability. Proxy objects, custom applications, unsupported entities, 3D views, and some annotation features may be simplified or omitted. Shaded and rendered views can contain raster data; increasing its resolution improves detail but increases file size. Verify that the recipient’s viewer supports any required layers, measurements, 3D data, signatures, passwords, or markups.

Reputable online converters commonly offer DWG to PDF, DWF, SVG, or image formats, but dependable DWFX output is uncommon and should not be assumed from a service that merely lists “DWF.” Use an online service only when its current output list explicitly names .dwfx; review its privacy and file-retention terms before uploading confidential project data. For controlled or multi-sheet publishing, use AutoCAD or a compatible Autodesk desktop product.
