How to convert dwg to png file

A PNG is needed when a CAD drawing must appear in a browser, report, presentation, or image-only workflow. Converting it rasterizes the selected DWG view or sheet, making it easy to display and share but removing editable CAD entities.

What the DWG format is

DWG is a proprietary binary CAD format associated with Autodesk AutoCAD and supported by applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD, and many architecture, engineering, and construction tools. It can contain 2D and 3D geometry, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, hatch patterns, styles, layouts, metadata, and links to external references.

DWG files are common in architectural plans, mechanical drawings, surveys, construction documents, and engineering designs. A CAD application or compatible viewer is required to interpret their geometry, coordinates, layers, and model data; ordinary image viewers cannot open those elements.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format that stores pixels instead of CAD entities. It supports full-color images and optional transparency, and it preserves clean linework without the compression artifacts introduced by JPEG.

A PNG does not retain DWG layers, blocks, layouts, coordinate data, editable dimensions, model objects, or dependable measurement scale. It represents only the selected view or plotted sheet as an image, usually one PNG file per output page.

How to convert a DWG to PNG

Using AutoCAD

  1. Open the DWG and resolve missing fonts, external references, raster images, proxy objects, and plot styles before exporting.
  2. Select the required model or layout tab. Use a layout when the image must match a paper sheet, title block, viewport arrangement, and page orientation.
  3. Open Output → Plot.
  4. Choose a PNG plotter such as PublishToWeb PNG.pc3, if it is installed with your AutoCAD configuration. If it is unavailable, add a raster plotter through the plotter configuration tools or use the version-specific image export command.
  5. Set the paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, centering, background, and CTB or STB plot style. Enable plot lineweights when the output must match a printed drawing.
  6. Use Preview to check clipping, text, hatches, lineweights, colors, and the title block position.
  7. Plot the drawing, choose an output folder, and save the resulting .png file.

For a model-space image, set the plot area to the required extents or window and choose a suitable scale. For a presentation image rather than a plotted sheet, an application’s image export command may provide view, pixel-size, background, and resolution controls.

Using another desktop CAD application

Open the DWG in a compatible CAD application that supports raster export, then use its Print, Plot, Export, or Save as image command. Configure the page, drawing area, scale, pixel dimensions, and background before selecting PNG. A normal screenshot is less suitable because it may have low resolution, omit lineweights, and capture interface elements.

Converting without installing software

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com by uploading the DWG, choosing PNG as the target format, starting the conversion, and downloading the generated image. Use this method for visual sharing, and retain the original DWG for editing, measurement, and future exports. Do not upload confidential drawings unless the applicable privacy and file-handling requirements permit it.

Quality and compatibility limitations

  • Resolution: PNG output is rasterized. For printed pages, use an export setting around 300 dpi or a sufficiently large pixel dimension when the software provides that control; screen documents generally need less. Large sheets at high resolution can create very large files.
  • Scale: Pixels do not provide reliable CAD measurement unless the image dimensions, intended print size, and plotting scale are documented. Keep the DWG for dimensioning, fabrication, and coordinate-based work.
  • Appearance: Missing SHX or TrueType fonts, unresolved external references, unsupported proxy objects, hidden layers, viewport settings, and incorrect CTB or STB plot styles can change the image.
  • Transparency: PNG supports transparent pixels, but plotter and application settings determine whether the background is transparent, white, or another color. Check the result in the software that will display it.
  • 3D drawings: The PNG captures only the selected camera or view and its visible display state. It cannot contain the selectable 3D model, alternate views, layer states, or camera data.
  • Editing: Image editors can crop, annotate, or retouch the PNG, but they cannot restore DWG geometry, layers, snapping, dimensions, or editable text from the rasterized image.
