Free online SCH to PNG converter

Documentation systems, presentations, and image viewers often require a static image instead of an editable schematic file. Converting an SCH file to PNG makes the circuit diagram easier to share, print, embed, and view without the original EDA application.

What the SCH format is

In the CAD field, SCH usually identifies an electronic schematic file containing component symbols, wires, labels, pin connections, and design metadata. It is used in PCB and electronic design automation workflows by tools such as KiCad, OrCAD Capture, and older EAGLE releases.

The extension does not identify one universal file structure. KiCad, OrCAD, and EAGLE use different SCH dialects, and some versions are text-based while others are application-specific. Open the file with the program that created it, or use a converter that explicitly supports that dialect. Renaming another file to .sch does not convert it.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster image format supported by web browsers, office software, documentation systems, and most image viewers. It preserves sharp schematic lines without JPEG compression artifacts and can include a transparent background.

A PNG is a picture, not an editable circuit design. Symbols, nets, footprints, electrical rules, and component metadata become pixels and cannot normally be restored by importing the image into an EDA editor. PNG is therefore appropriate for reports, tickets, presentations, web pages, printing, and visual archives, but not as a replacement for the original SCH file.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the SCH-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
2. Upload the SCH file and start the conversion.
3. Download the generated PNG when processing finishes.

This option requires no installed software and is available free of charge. The result depends on support for the specific SCH dialect; inspect the PNG for missing symbols, clipped labels, altered line connections, and incorrect page boundaries. Do not upload confidential schematics unless the applicable privacy and retention terms are acceptable.

Using KiCad

1. Open a KiCad schematic in the Schematic Editor. For a legacy file, use a KiCad release that supports its format and save a copy in the current project format if requested.
2. Choose File → Plot, select SVG, set the page, scale, colors, and output options, then generate the SVG.
3. Open the SVG in Inkscape and choose File → Export. Set the required image dimensions or resolution and export it as schematic.png.

Inkscape can also rasterize the exported SVG from a command line:

inkscape schematic.svg --export-filename=schematic.png --export-dpi=300

If the EDA application provides PDF output instead, export the schematic to PDF and rasterize it with a PDF-capable application such as Poppler:

pdftoppm -png -r 300 schematic.pdf schematic

This creates a PNG for each PDF page. Use -r 600 when small pin labels or reference designators need additional detail and the larger output is acceptable.

Using EAGLE, OrCAD, or another native application

Open the SCH file in the application that created it and use its native image, SVG, PDF, or print export. Older EAGLE versions can export a schematic image through File → Export → Image; choose PNG and set the image resolution if that option is available in the installed release.

For OrCAD and other applications that do not provide direct PNG output, export to PDF or SVG, then rasterize the intermediate file with Inkscape or a PDF conversion tool. Do not assume that an OrCAD SCH will open correctly in KiCad, or that an EAGLE SCH will translate correctly into another editor: symbol libraries, hidden layers, page settings, and connectivity may not transfer.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG quality is determined by the export dimensions or DPI, not by the SCH file. Around 300 DPI is normally sufficient for documents; 600 DPI can improve readability of dense schematics and very small labels at the cost of a larger file. Exporting from SVG or PDF generally produces cleaner lines than taking a screen capture.

Large designs may be unreadable when reduced to one image. Export separate sheets or pages when the schematic contains small text. A transparent background is useful for overlays, while a white background is usually more reliable for office documents and printing.

Unavailable fonts, custom symbols, hidden layers, color settings, page frames, and missing libraries can change the rendered result. Check junction dots, net labels, reference designators, pin numbers, and sheet boundaries after conversion. Keep the original SCH and its project libraries because the PNG contains no machine-readable connectivity or editable design data.
