A PCB designer may need a PNG preview for documentation, email, issue tracking, or software that cannot open manufacturing files. PNG is also useful for sharing a rendered board layer without distributing the complete fabrication data.

What the GERBER format is

Gerber is the standard vector format used to describe printed-circuit-board manufacturing layers. A Gerber file can contain copper traces, solder-mask openings, silkscreen graphics, paste, board outlines, or other plotted artwork; a complete PCB normally consists of several Gerber files rather than one file.

Modern files usually use the RS-274X format, which stores aperture definitions and drawing commands in the file. Common extensions include .gbr, .ger, .gtl for top copper, .gbl for bottom copper, .gto for top silkscreen, and .gko for a board outline. NC drill data is commonly supplied separately as Excellon files, so converting the Gerber layers alone may not show holes.

PCB CAD applications such as KiCad, Autodesk Fusion Electronics, Altium Designer, and EasyEDA create Gerber output through their fabrication or plotting tools. Gerber files are commonly encountered in PCB manufacturing packages, design reviews, quotation requests, and production archives.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format that stores a pixel-based rendering rather than editable PCB geometry. It supports lossless compression, transparency, and full-color or grayscale output, making it suitable for previews, web pages, reports, and annotated documentation.

PNG is preferable to JPEG for Gerber previews because JPEG compression can blur narrow tracks, fine silkscreen text, and board edges. A PNG does not retain Gerber apertures, coordinates, units, polarity commands, layer metadata, or manufacturing tolerances, so it cannot replace the original fabrication files.

How to convert GERBER to PNG

Using gerbv

  1. Install gerbv, an open-source Gerber viewer, and open the required file with File → Open.
  2. Load other layers with File → Open or the viewer's layer controls if the image must show a composite board. Confirm each file's polarity, color, and visibility before exporting.
  3. Fit the board to the window and check the outline, text, clearances, and registration. Gerbv interprets the Gerber coordinates and aperture data while rendering the image.
  4. Choose the PNG export command in the application, set the output filename such as board-top.png, and choose a sufficiently high resolution. Use a transparent background only when the receiving application handles alpha correctly.

Gerbv also provides command-line export on systems where that option is available:

gerbv -x png -o board.png board.gbr

For a composite preview, pass the required Gerber layers as inputs and verify the resulting output, because the exact command-line behavior and export options can vary by gerbv version.

Using a PCB CAD viewer

KiCad's Gerber Viewer can open a fabrication folder, display individual layers, and export the visible rendering through its image export command. Open the viewer, select File → Open Gerber Files, add the relevant layers, adjust visibility and colors, then use the PNG export option. This is useful when you need to inspect several layers together before rasterizing them.

Using the built-in online converter

You can convert the file on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Upload the Gerber file, choose PNG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the rendered image. For a multi-layer PCB, convert the required layers separately or use a desktop viewer that can compose them before export.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG resolution determines whether narrow features remain visible. Increase the export DPI or pixel dimensions for fine traces and small text; a low-resolution image can make separate tracks appear joined or erase details during scaling. Keep the original-size PNG for inspection and create reduced copies only for web or document use.

Gerber polarity affects the rendered result: a negative layer may appear inverted if the converter or viewer applies the wrong polarity. Check the board outline and layer alignment before export, especially when combining files from different fabrication packages.

A PNG has no reliable physical scale unless its pixel dimensions and intended DPI are documented. Do not use it to measure clearances, generate manufacturing data, or recreate a PCB layout. Preserve the original Gerber set and separate drill files alongside any PNG preview.
