Convert GERBER to JPG

A JPG is useful when PCB artwork must be placed in a report, quotation, email, or application that cannot open Gerber files. It provides a compact visual preview, but the original manufacturing files must be retained for fabrication and editing.

What the Gerber format contains

Gerber is the PCB industry artwork format used by board designers and fabricators. A manufacturing package normally contains multiple files rather than one complete board image: copper, solder mask, silkscreen, solder paste, board outline, and mechanical layers are separate files.

Most current files use extended Gerber, historically called RS-274X, which includes aperture definitions in the file. Filenames vary by CAD system; examples include board-F_Cu.gbr, board.gtl, and board.gko. Drill positions are commonly supplied separately in Excellon drill files such as board.drl.

KiCad, Altium Designer, Autodesk Fusion, OrCAD, and other PCB design tools generate Gerber output. A Gerber viewer can display one layer or composite selected layers into a board-artwork preview; Gerber data does not normally show components as an assembled 3D board would.

What the JPG format provides

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster image format for documents, browsers, email, and image viewers. Its lossy compression usually produces smaller files than PNG for photographic content, but it can blur sharp PCB features such as traces, pads, silkscreen text, and board edges.

JPG has no alpha channel, so a transparent preview must be placed on a solid background before export. Use PNG, SVG, or PDF when clean line art, transparency, scalable geometry, or print-quality drawings are required.

Exporting a Gerber layer or board view

KiCad GerbView is a suitable free desktop option for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It opens Gerber and drill files without requiring the original PCB project.

1. Open GerbView and load the required Gerber files with File → Open Gerber File. Use File → Open Drill File to include holes and drill marks.
2. Enable only the layers needed for the image. A top-side artwork view may include top copper, top solder mask, top silkscreen, board outline, and drills; internal and fabrication layers should remain hidden unless needed.
3. Set readable layer colours, select a white canvas if the result will become JPG, and fit the view to the board outline. Confirm that layer alignment and polarity are correct before exporting.
4. Export a PNG from GerbView, then create the JPG from that PNG. Preserve the PNG as the lossless master image.

ImageMagick can make the final JPG while flattening any transparency onto white:

Gerbv is another free Gerber viewer, particularly useful on Linux. It can load multiple Gerber layers and export a raster image; configure layer visibility and colours before using its PNG export. Image editors such as GIMP, Photoshop, or Affinity Photo can then open the PNG and save it as JPG.

For a simple single-layer conversion, CloudConvert and Convertio can be practical online options when their current format selectors list GERBER input and JPG output. Check the result at full size, because online services may render only one uploaded layer rather than composite an entire manufacturing archive. Do not upload unreleased layouts, controlled technical data, or customer files unless the service's retention and confidentiality terms are acceptable.

Resolution and compatibility limits

A single Gerber file usually represents one PCB layer. Exporting top-copper.gbr creates a top-copper image, not a complete board preview; composite the relevant Gerber and drill files first.

Choose pixel dimensions for the final use rather than enlarging a small JPG afterward. For a document preview, 2,000 pixels or more across the board is often needed to keep fine text legible; inspect narrow tracks and silkscreen at 100% size. JPEG quality settings around 90–95 reduce artifacts but do not eliminate them.

Never send JPG to a fabricator as manufacturing data. Rasterization discards Gerber coordinates, apertures, polarity, layer identity, and drill information. A JPG also has no reliable physical PCB scale after resizing; create a dimensioned PDF or SVG from the PCB CAD tool when measurements must be communicated.
