DWG files describe CAD geometry, while TAP files usually contain CNC toolpaths. The conversion is needed when a drawing must be prepared for a CNC router, mill, plasma cutter, laser, or other machine controller that accepts TAP/G-code input.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native binary drawing format associated with AutoCAD and is also created or opened by BricsCAD, DraftSight, ZWCAD, nanoCAD, and other CAD applications. It stores 2D entities, 3D solids, layers, blocks, dimensions, text, layouts, and drawing metadata.

DWG is commonly encountered in architectural plans, mechanical part drawings, fabrication layouts, and survey data. A DWG is design geometry, not normally a machine-ready cutting program: it does not by itself define tool diameter, cutting order, feed rate, spindle speed, depth, work zero, or safe movements.

What the TAP format is

In the CAD/CAM context, TAP is usually a text file containing CNC instructions, commonly a dialect of G-code. CAM software writes commands such as G0 for rapid movement, G1 for linear cutting, and M3 or M5 for spindle control.

The .tap extension is a naming convention rather than a single universal specification. A router, mill, plasma cutter, or controller may require a particular dialect, header, coordinate convention, units setting, line-ending style, or postprocessor. Some machines accept the same content under .nc or .gcode, while others reject files produced for a different controller.

How to actually convert DWG to TAP

A CAM operation is required; merely renaming drawing.dwg to drawing.tap does not create usable machine code.

  1. Open the DWG in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, or another compatible CAD application. Remove construction geometry, duplicate lines, dimensions, text, hatching, and closed profiles that should not be machined.
  2. Check the drawing units, scale, layer visibility, and coordinate origin. For a 2D profile workflow, export suitable geometry with File → Save As or File → Export to part.dxf. DXF is more widely accepted by CAM tools than DWG.
  3. Open the DXF, or the DWG if your CAM program supports it, in a CAM application such as Autodesk Fusion, FreeCAD with the Path workbench, VCarve, SheetCam, or the machine manufacturer’s software.
  4. Set the stock or material size, machine orientation, work coordinate system, origin, units, tool diameter, cutting depth, step-down, feed rate, plunge rate, spindle or power settings, and clearance height.
  5. Create the required operation: for example, a 2D contour, pocket, profile cut, drilling cycle, engraving path, or plasma profile. Arrange inside/outside cuts and tabs so the finished part remains attached to the stock.
  6. Simulate the toolpath and inspect the generated motion for collisions, unwanted cuts, incorrect scale, open contours, and excessive depth.
  7. Choose the postprocessor matching the exact controller or machine model, then use Post Process or Export G-code. Set the output filename to part.tap if the postprocessor permits that extension.
  8. Transfer the TAP file to the controller and verify the first run above the material, at reduced feed rate where appropriate. Confirm the machine’s units and origin before enabling cutting.

FreeCAD can provide a no-cost desktop workflow: convert DWG to DXF in a DWG-capable CAD program, import the DXF into FreeCAD, create operations in Path, select the appropriate machine postprocessor, and save the resulting G-code with a .tap extension. The built-in converter on 101convert.com can also be used for free without installing software when DWG-to-TAP conversion is offered for the uploaded file, but its output still requires controller-specific verification.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

A DWG-to-TAP conversion is not geometry-preserving in the same sense as DWG-to-DXF. The result depends on manufacturing decisions made during CAM programming, so one DWG can produce many different valid TAP files.

Check for unsupported DWG entities such as splines, 3D solids, associative dimensions, blocks, and proxy objects. Convert necessary curves to polylines or arcs, close profile gaps, and verify dimensions after import. A drawing made in millimetres can be cut at an incorrect scale if the CAM import or controller interprets it as inches.

Use the machine’s supplied postprocessor whenever possible. A syntactically valid TAP file can still damage equipment if it uses the wrong axis order, arc format, coordinate mode, tool-change commands, spindle commands, feed units, or origin convention. Always review the text output and run a simulation or dry run before machining.
