Convert DWG to LCF

Converting .dwg files (AutoCAD Drawing) to .lcf format (ArchiCAD Library Container File).

Convert DWG files online

We don’t have a dedicated online converter for DWG to LCF yet, but you can convert DWG files online to these formats:

How to convert dwg to lcf file

Files with the extension .dwg relate to 2D/3D drawings generated by the professional CAD software, Autodesk AutoCAD.

An .lcf file stores an entire structure of libraries used by ArchiCAD, a design software for architects. These libraries include folder structures, individual objects, .pla files, and other .lcf storages.

AutoCAD works with both file types, .dwg and .lcf, and to our knowledge there is no possibility to complete a conversion between these files.

Simply put, it is impossible to convert DWG to LCF directly.
Thus, there is no so-called dwg to lcf converter or a free online .dwg to .lcf conversion tool.

Understanding DWG and LCF file formats

The DWG file format is a widely used format for storing two and three-dimensional design data and metadata. It is the native format for several CAD packages including AutoCAD. DWG files contain vector image data and metadata that describe the contents of the file, such as the design, geometric data, maps, photos, and more.

The LCF file format, on the other hand, is associated with ArchiCAD, a BIM (Building Information Modeling) software. LCF stands for Library Container File, which is used to store a collection of library parts, such as objects, textures, and other elements used in architectural design projects.

How to convert DWG to LCF

Converting a DWG file to an LCF file involves a few steps, as these formats serve different purposes and are used in different software environments. The conversion process typically requires importing the DWG file into a BIM software that supports both formats, such as ArchiCAD, and then exporting it as an LCF file.

Best software for DWG to LCF conversion

The best software for converting DWG to LCF is ArchiCAD. ArchiCAD is a comprehensive BIM software that allows you to import DWG files and convert them into LCF format. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Open ArchiCAD and create a new project or open an existing one.
  • Use the File → Open menu to import the DWG file into your project.
  • Once the DWG file is imported, you can adjust and modify the elements as needed.
  • To export the project as an LCF file, go to File → Save As and select the LCF format from the list of available file types.

By following these steps, you can successfully convert a DWG file into an LCF file using ArchiCAD.
