DWG is a proprietary CAD drawing format widely used for 2D and 3D design data. It is most closely associated with AutoCAD and other CAD platforms used by architects, engineers, manufacturers, and drafters. DWG files commonly store geometry, layers, blocks, annotations, dimensions, and model space/paper space layouts. They are used for technical drawings, construction plans, mechanical parts, and general design exchange.

PRT is a part model format used by several CAD systems, most notably PTC Creo and related engineering software. A PRT file typically represents a single 3D part with features, sketches, parameters, and solid geometry. Compared with DWG, PRT is better suited for parametric modeling, downstream mechanical design, and manufacturing workflows. Its main advantage is that it preserves editable part structure within the target CAD ecosystem.

Can dwg be converted to prt?

There is no universal direct DWG-to-PRT conversion because the formats serve different purposes: DWG is usually drawing-centric, while PRT is part-model-centric. In most cases, you must import the DWG into a CAD system and rebuild or trace the geometry before saving the result as .prt.

The best workflow depends on whether your DWG contains 2D geometry or an imported 3D model. If the DWG is only a drawing, the output PRT will usually be a reconstructed part, not a fully automatic conversion.

Best desktop option: PTC Creo

PTC Creo is the most relevant desktop choice if your goal is to end up with a native .prt file.

  1. Open PTC Creo.
  2. Use File → Open and try the .dwg file if your Creo installation includes DWG import support.
  3. If direct DWG import is not available or the file does not open cleanly, first convert the DWG to a supported exchange format such as .dxf, .step, or .iges using a CAD translator.
  4. If the file is 2D, import it as sketch geometry or reference geometry.
  5. Create a new part with File → New → Part.
  6. Recreate or trace the imported geometry into sketches, then use Extrude, Revolve, or other solid features to build the 3D model.
  7. Save the finished model with File → Save As and choose .prt.

Alternative desktop workflow: AutoCAD plus a translator

If your DWG starts in AutoCAD, you can prepare it before importing into a PRT-capable CAD system.

  1. Open the DWG in AutoCAD or AutoCAD Mechanical.
  2. Clean up the drawing: remove duplicate entities, ensure closed profiles, and verify units.
  3. Export to an exchange format such as .dxf, .step, or .iges if your downstream CAD system accepts it.
  4. Open the exported file in Creo or another CAD system that can save native part files.
  5. Rebuild the geometry as a part and save it as .prt.

Useful online converters

For simple translation or format inspection, reputable services such as AnyConv, Convertio, or CAD Exchanger Cloud may help with intermediate conversions like DWG to DXF or STEP. However, online tools rarely create a true editable PRT part from a DWG drawing, so they are best used only as a bridge to desktop CAD software.

Notes on quality and limitations

  • DWG and PRT are not equivalent formats, so a one-click conversion usually does not preserve full design intelligence.
  • If the DWG is 2D only, the result in PRT will usually be a reconstructed part, not an automatic conversion.
  • If the DWG contains 3D solids, some CAD systems can import them more effectively, but feature history and parametric relationships are typically lost.
  • Units, layers, line types, and annotations may not translate cleanly into a PRT file.
  • For best results, start with a clean DWG, confirm scale and units, and use the target CAD system to rebuild the model rather than relying on a direct converter.
