What a prt file is
PRT is a common extension for CAD part files, but it is not one universal format. Different CAD systems use .prt for different native part files, including Creo/ProENGINEER, Solid Edge, and NX/Unigraphics. Because of that, the first step is always to identify which program created the file.
Best target format
If your goal is to move a part into another CAD system, STEP (.stp or .step) is usually the best choice. It is a widely supported neutral CAD exchange format and generally preserves solid geometry well. If you only need a lightweight mesh for 3D printing, STL may be appropriate, but it does not keep editable CAD features. For viewing or sharing, PDF or 3D PDF can also be useful when supported.
How to convert prt to step
Best method: use the original CAD application that created the PRT file whenever possible. Native export usually gives the most reliable result.
- Open the
.prtfile in the source CAD program, such as Creo, Solid Edge, or NX. - Confirm that the part loads correctly and that the geometry looks complete.
- Choose File → Save As, File → Export, or File → Save a Copy, depending on the software.
- Select STEP as the output format and save as
.stpor.step. - If available, set export options such as units, tolerance, solid/surface output, and assembly structure.
- Open the exported STEP file in the target CAD program to verify scale and geometry.
Other conversion options
If you do not have the original CAD software, try a CAD translator that supports your specific PRT variant. Reputable desktop options include CAD Exchanger and CrossManager. These tools can often read multiple native CAD formats and export to STEP or other neutral formats.
For online viewing or limited conversion, CAD Exchanger Cloud and Autodesk Viewer may help, but PRT support varies by subtype and may be limited. Always check whether the service supports your exact PRT format before uploading.
FreeCAD can sometimes import CAD data through supported translators or add-ons, but it is not a universal PRT converter and may not open every PRT variant.
Quality and compatibility notes
PRT files are format-specific, so a file from Creo may not open in software expecting a Solid Edge or NX part file. When converting to STEP, the geometry usually transfers well, but feature history, constraints, materials, and other parametric data are often lost because STEP is mainly a neutral exchange format.
If the model contains surfaces, complex features, or assemblies, inspect the result carefully after export. For mesh-based uses such as 3D printing, STL is acceptable, but the output quality depends on the chosen resolution. Always confirm units and scale after conversion to avoid oversized or undersized parts.
Quick summary
To convert .prt to .step, open the file in the CAD system that created it and export it as STEP. If that is not possible, use a reputable CAD translator such as CAD Exchanger or CrossManager, and verify the result in another CAD viewer or editor.
