What the DWG format is

DWG is a proprietary binary CAD format associated with Autodesk AutoCAD and supported by applications such as BricsCAD, DraftSight, and ZWCAD. It can store 2D geometry, 3D objects, layers, blocks, dimensions, annotations, hatches, layouts, external references, and drawing metadata.

What the EPS format is

EPS keeps vector linework resolution-independent when enlarged and is supported by applications such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW. It does not preserve DWG layers, CAD constraints, parametric history, model data, or full 3D behavior.

How to convert DWG to EPS

Using AutoCAD or compatible CAD software

1. Open the DWG in AutoCAD or another CAD application that provides an EPS or PostScript plotter.
2. Resolve missing external references and install the required SHX or TrueType fonts. Missing resources can produce incomplete geometry or substituted text.
3. Open the model view or layout to export and choose File → Plot, or press Ctrl+P.
4. Choose an EPS/PostScript configuration from the printer or plotter list, such as PostScript EPS.pc3 when it is installed. If no suitable configuration exists, create one through the application’s plotter manager.
5. Set the paper size, orientation, plot area, scale, centering or offsets, and the required plot-style table. For a layout, select that layout rather than plotting the entire model unintentionally.
6. Check lineweights, screening, hatch patterns, transparency, and the display mode. Use 2D wireframe or hidden-line output when the result must contain clean vector linework.
7. Enable plotting to a file if the dialog provides that option, enter a filename ending in .eps, and click Plot.
8. Open the EPS in Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Ghostscript, or another PostScript-capable application to inspect its bounds, scale, fonts, and linework.

For repeated jobs, automate the tested plot configuration through the CAD application’s scripting or command-line plotting tools. Commands and switches differ between AutoCAD-compatible products, so validate the page setup before batch processing.

Quality and compatibility limits
