Convert DWFX to DWG

Convert DWFX review packages into editable DWG geometry with AutoCAD and verify output limits.

How to convert dwfx to dwg file

A DWFX file is commonly received as a plotted review or sharing package, while AutoCAD and other CAD systems require DWG for editing and downstream design work. Conversion is useful only when the DWFX contains recoverable vector geometry; it cannot restore the original parametric model, constraints, or feature history.

What the DWFX format is

DWFX, or Autodesk Design Web Format based on Microsoft XPS, is published by Autodesk applications such as AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, and Navisworks for viewing, printing, review, and controlled sharing. Autodesk Design Review can open DWFX files. A file may contain several sheets, 2D vector graphics, raster images, text, layers, measurements, and review markups, but it is generally a published representation rather than the editable source model.

What the DWG format is

DWG is the native drawing format of AutoCAD and is supported by many compatible CAD applications. It can store editable lines, arcs, polylines, text, dimensions, blocks, layers, layouts, and, depending on the source and software, 3D solids and other object types. DWG is the appropriate target when the recipient must modify geometry, add design content, edit layouts, or continue the drawing in a CAD workflow.

How to convert DWFX to DWG in AutoCAD

  1. Open a current full version of AutoCAD and create a blank drawing. DWG TrueView and Autodesk Design Review are viewers; they do not provide a general editable DWFX-to-DWG conversion.
  2. Run DWFIMPORT. In versions that expose the command on the ribbon, choose Insert → Import → DWF.
  3. Select the DWFX file, choose the required sheet or sheets, and set the insertion point, scale, rotation, layer behavior, and other import options.
  4. Confirm the import, inspect the resulting objects, and save the drawing with File → Save As using a .dwg filename.

DWFIMPORT is intended to import recoverable 2D content from DWF and DWFx files. If the installed AutoCAD release does not accept the DWFX file, open it in Autodesk Design Review or another Autodesk publishing application and export or republish it as DWF when that option is available. Then run DWFIMPORT on the resulting .dwf file. Do not simply rename .dwfx to .dwf; changing the extension does not change the file format.

When direct import is unavailable

Use DWFATTACH in AutoCAD to attach the DWFX or DWF as an underlay, then set its insertion point, scale, and rotation. Trace required geometry with object snaps where supported. An underlay is a referenced display object, not editable DWG geometry; do not assume that BIND or EXPLODE will convert it, because those commands depend on the imported object type and version.

For nonconfidential files, online services such as Zamzar, Convertio, or AnyConv may offer DWF-to-DWG conversion, but direct DWFX support is inconsistent. If a service accepts only DWF, create a genuine DWF with Autodesk software first. Check its supported extensions, sheet handling, maximum file size, retention policy, and output before uploading. Do not use an online service for proprietary designs, personal data, or files restricted by contract or security policy.

Quality and compatibility limits

A DWFX conversion cannot recreate the authoring model. AutoCAD may recover 2D lines, polylines, arcs, text, fills, and some layer information, but dimensions can become ordinary geometry, fonts can be substituted, hatch patterns can change, raster content can remain an image, and review markups may not become native AutoCAD objects. 3D views, multiple sheets, clipping, transparency, and discipline-specific objects can import incompletely or not at all.

A DWFX containing only a raster image cannot produce accurate editable vectors through ordinary conversion; it requires raster-to-vector digitizing and manual cleanup. After import, check units and scale against a known dimension, verify every sheet, inspect text and lineweights, review layers and markups, and save to the DWG version required by the recipient. If precise editing or model data is required, request the original DWG, RVT, IPT, or other authoring file instead.
