Convert DWFX to DWF

Older Autodesk viewers, document-management systems, and review devices may accept .dwf but reject the XPS-based .dwfx extension. Converting the file provides a DWF package for recipients that require the original Design Web Format.

What the DWFX format is

DWFX is Autodesk’s XPS-based variant of DWF. Autodesk publishing tools can package 2D sheets, vector geometry, raster content, 3D views, layers, properties, measurements, hyperlinks, and review information in a DWFX file.

AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Inventor, Navisworks, and other Autodesk applications can publish DWFX through export or plot workflows. Windows software with XPS support may display some DWFX content, but full design-review features require Autodesk Design Review or compatible Autodesk software.

What the DWF format is

DWF is Autodesk’s distribution format for design data. It can contain multiple sheets, vector and raster content, model views, layer information, properties, measurements, hyperlinks, and markups without exposing the original DWG, RVT, IAM, or other authoring file.

DWF is the appropriate target when a recipient has a legacy Autodesk Design Review installation, a document system that validates the .dwf extension, or an integration that does not support the XPS-based DWFX container. Neither DWF nor DWFX is an editable replacement for the source model.

How to convert DWFX to DWF

Using Autodesk Design Review

1. Install Autodesk Design Review, the legacy Windows desktop viewer that supports DWF and DWFX. Confirm that your organization permits its use; it is no longer Autodesk’s actively developed viewer.
2. Open the .dwfx file in Design Review.
3. Select File → Save As.
4. Choose DWF Files (*.dwf) as the output type, select a destination, and save.
5. Open the resulting .dwf and inspect every required sheet, page size, scale, layer state, model view, measurement, hyperlink, and markup.

If the save dialog does not offer DWF, that Design Review version or the particular DWFX content cannot be republished directly. In that case, open the original DWG, RVT, IAM, or other source file in its Autodesk application and publish it again using the DWF plotter or export command, such as File → Export → DWF or the application’s DWF publishing workflow.

Using an online converter

Online DWFX-to-DWF support is uncommon and can change without notice. A service such as CloudConvert or Zamzar should be considered only if its current format list explicitly shows both DWFX as the input and DWF as the output.

1. Upload the DWFX file through the service’s CAD conversion page.
2. Select DWF as the output format and start the conversion.
3. Download the result and open it in Design Review or another compatible Autodesk viewer.

Do not upload confidential building plans, infrastructure drawings, proprietary assemblies, or regulated project records to a public converter. Online converters may discard 3D data, markups, hyperlinks, custom properties, layers, or presentation settings; a local Autodesk workflow is preferable for controlled or technically complex files.

Quality and compatibility limits

Changing DWFX to DWF changes the distribution container, not the underlying design into an editable CAD file. Modify the original authoring file when geometry, constraints, assemblies, BIM data, or sheet content must change.

Older DWF viewers may not render newer publishing features, and some DWFX presentation features may not have a direct DWF equivalent. Check 2D and 3D content, sheet order, page sizes, scales, layer visibility, measurements, hyperlinks, markups, and metadata after conversion.

Keep the original DWFX with the converted DWF when the file is part of a controlled record. The files can differ in metadata, rendering behavior, supported features, and compatibility with later Autodesk software.
