What the DWFX format is

DWFX is Autodesk’s Design Web Format based on Microsoft’s XPS packaging technology. It is used to distribute view-only design documents containing CAD drawings, layouts, annotations, measurements, and sometimes 3D model views without requiring the recipient to have the authoring CAD application.

AutoCAD, Revit, Inventor, Civil 3D, and other Autodesk applications can publish DWFX files. You commonly encounter them as project submittals, design reviews, construction documentation, and files shared with people who need to inspect a design but not edit the source model.

A DWFX file is not normally a single bitmap. It may contain several sheets or views, so a conversion must specify which page or viewpoint should become the WEBP image.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format supported by current web browsers and many image-processing applications. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation, although a normal DWFX conversion produces one static image per selected sheet.

WEBP is useful for web previews, documentation portals, email attachments, and applications that accept image files but cannot display CAD or XPS-based documents. Lossy WEBP usually produces smaller files than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality; lossless WEBP preserves rendered pixels but can be larger.

How to convert DWFX to WEBP

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the DWFX converter on the 101convert.com website.
2. Upload the DWFX file and select WEBP as the output format.
3. Choose the required page or rendering options if the converter presents them.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting WEBP file.

This route requires no installed software and is free on the 101convert.com website. Review the selected page before downloading when the DWFX contains multiple sheets.

Desktop conversion through PDF

1. Open the file in Autodesk Design Review, or another DWFX-capable Autodesk viewer.
2. Select the required sheet or view and use File → Print.
3. Choose a PDF printer such as Microsoft Print to PDF, set the paper size and orientation, and enable a high-quality or vector-capable output option when available.
4. Open the resulting PDF and rasterize the required page with a PDF renderer such as Poppler’s pdftoppm.
5. Encode the rendered PNG as WEBP with Google’s WebP tools:

The first command renders page 1 at 200 DPI; change -r 200 for a different resolution. The second command uses lossy quality 85. For lossless output, use cwebp -lossless page-1.png -o output.webp.

Quality and compatibility limitations

WEBP cannot retain DWFX layers, CAD entities, measurements, searchable text, sheet navigation, model data, or annotations as editable objects. It stores only the rendered appearance of the selected view.

Set the PDF page size and print scale before rasterizing. A low DPI setting can make fine dimensions and line weights unreadable; 200–300 DPI is a practical range for document previews, while large-format drawings may require more.

Use lossless WEBP or a high lossy quality value when thin lines, small text, and dimension arrows must remain legible. Transparent backgrounds depend on the viewer and export path; printing through PDF commonly produces an opaque page background.

For a multi-sheet DWFX, create one WEBP per sheet, using filenames such as project-sheet-01.webp. Combining sheets into one tall image is possible, but it changes the document layout and may create an impractically large bitmap.
