A TIFF may be too large for web publishing, messaging, or an application that accepts only WEBP images. Converting it usually reduces file size for delivery while retaining the original TIFF for print, editing, or archival use.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster image format used for scans, photographs, printing, publishing, and archival storage. It can preserve high bit depths, RGB or CMYK color, embedded ICC profiles, transparency, and lossless compression such as LZW or ZIP. A TIFF can also contain multiple pages or frames.

Scanners, desktop-publishing software, photo editors, and print-production systems commonly create TIFF files. Their size is often much larger than web-oriented formats because they retain print-quality pixels, editing data, and metadata.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster format designed primarily for web delivery. It supports lossy compression, lossless compression, transparency, animation, and selected metadata, although the features available depend on the application that reads or writes the file.

Lossy WEBP usually produces smaller files than an equivalent JPEG at comparable visual quality. Lossless WEBP can also be smaller than an uncompressed or losslessly compressed TIFF, but the result depends on the image and the TIFF compression used. WEBP is suitable for websites, browser applications, thumbnails, product images, and sharing when the receiving software supports it.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the TIFF-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.
2. Select the source file with a .tif or .tiff extension.
3. Choose WEBP as the output format. If compression controls are available, select lossy or lossless mode and set the quality.
4. Start the conversion and download the resulting .webp file.
5. Open the output in the intended browser or application and check its dimensions, colors, transparency, and fine detail before distributing it.

Do not upload confidential scans or unpublished material unless the service's handling and retention policies are acceptable for that file.

Using ImageMagick locally

ImageMagick is suitable for repeatable conversions and scripts. A basic lossy conversion is:

A quality value around 80–90 is a practical starting point for photographs. It is not a universal quality scale across all image formats, so inspect the result rather than relying on the number alone.

For lossless WEBP, use:

magick input.tiff -define webp:lossless=true output.webp

To remove metadata and embedded profiles deliberately, add -strip:

magick input.tiff -strip -quality 85 output.webp

-strip can reduce the file size, but it also removes color-management information, copyright data, EXIF data, and other metadata. Do not use it when the ICC profile or metadata must be retained.

If the source is CMYK and the destination is for browsers, convert to an appropriate RGB space such as sRGB before export, for example:

ImageMagick must be built with WebP support. Check magick -version and confirm that webp appears in the delegates list. A multi-page TIFF should normally be exported as separate images; the exact command can vary by ImageMagick version, but this pattern creates numbered outputs:

Verify the number and order of exported pages, because an ordinary WEBP file does not preserve a TIFF document's page structure.

Using desktop image software

For a single file in GIMP, open it with File → Open, then choose File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .webp, and set the quality or lossless option in the export dialog.

In Photoshop, use File → Save a Copy or File → Export → Export As, select WEBP, and configure the quality. The available commands depend on the Photoshop version and installed format support.

Quality and compatibility limits

Lossy conversion discards image information. Inspect small text, line art, screenshots, and sharp edges because ringing or block-like artifacts can appear even when photographs look acceptable. Use lossless WEBP when exact pixels matter, such as for diagrams, screenshots, scans, or intermediate processing.

WEBP is widely supported by current browsers and many image tools, but older operating systems, office applications, print workflows, and specialized viewers may not open it. Keep the original TIFF when it is needed for archival storage, later editing, or professional printing.

CMYK TIFFs commonly become RGB WEBP files because web image workflows are primarily RGB-based. Colors can change during that conversion, especially when the TIFF uses a non-sRGB profile. Preserve or explicitly convert the profile according to the destination; sRGB is generally appropriate for browser display.

Transparency may be retained when the TIFF contains an alpha channel, but confirm that the converter and target application support it. A multi-page TIFF requires separate WEBP files or, in limited workflows, an animated WEBP; animation support does not make WEBP a general replacement for a paginated document.
