Free online TIF to WEBP converter

A website, browser application, or sharing workflow may require WEBP because it usually delivers a smaller image than TIFF. Converting a TIFF can reduce storage and bandwidth use, but export settings must preserve the source’s required quality, transparency, and color.

What the TIF format is

TIF, also written TIFF, is a raster image format used for scanned documents, photography, publishing, mapping, medical imaging, print production, and archival storage. It supports high bit depths, RGB and CMYK color, embedded profiles, transparency, multiple compression methods, and sometimes multiple pages or frames.

Scanners, cameras, imaging equipment, and applications such as Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP, and desktop-publishing software commonly create TIFF files. A TIFF may contain lossless source data, layers or extra channels, extensive metadata, or a multipage document, depending on how it was saved.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google for web delivery. It supports lossy compression for photographs, lossless compression for graphics, transparency, and animation. Current major browsers support it, as do many image editors and operating systems.

WEBP is often substantially smaller than an equivalent TIFF, especially for photographs, making it suitable for websites, previews, apps, email, and screen display. It is not normally a replacement for a TIFF master used for editing, print production, scientific work, or long-term preservation.

Convert TIF to WEBP online

Convert with ImageMagick

A quality value around 80–90 is a practical starting point for photographs; inspect the result rather than treating the number as universal. For lossless WEBP, use:

To convert only the first image in a multipage TIFF, use:

A multipage TIFF does not automatically become a multipage WEBP. Convert pages separately, or create an animated WEBP only if the receiving application supports animation and that output is appropriate.

Convert with an image editor

In GIMP, open the TIFF with File → Open, choose File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .webp, and select the export settings. Use lossy quality around 80–90 for photographs; use lossless export for screenshots, diagrams, logos, or sharp text.

In a recent version of Photoshop with WEBP support, open the TIFF through File → Open, then use File → Export → Export As, choose WEBP, and select lossy or lossless output. Menu availability varies by Photoshop version and installed format support.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Lossy WEBP discards image information. Repeatedly exporting a lossy file can add artifacts, so retain the original TIFF as the editing master.
• Lossless WEBP preserves pixel data and is preferable for line art, screenshots, text-heavy graphics, and images requiring exact reproduction. It may be larger than lossy WEBP, but can be smaller than many TIFF encodings.
• WEBP uses an RGB/RGBA-oriented workflow. Convert a CMYK TIFF to RGB and verify color before using it for a browser or consumer application; CMYK data may otherwise be converted incorrectly or rejected.
• Layers, 16-bit channels, unusual TIFF compression, ICC profiles, metadata, extra channels, and transparency may not survive unchanged. Check dimensions, color, transparency, and metadata after conversion.
• WEBP is widely supported by current browsers, but older software, some print systems, and specialized archives may require TIFF, PNG, or JPEG instead.
• For archival, print, or future editing use, keep the original TIFF and treat WEBP as a distribution copy.
