A CMS, editor, or device may accept WEBP while rejecting AVIF, so a WEBP copy can be required for publishing or editing. Conversion also provides a broadly compatible web image, but the original AVIF should be retained when it contains higher-quality or HDR data.

What AVIF is

AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec and the HEIF image container. It supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, animation, HDR, wide-gamut color, and metadata. AVIF often delivers smaller files than JPEG or PNG at similar visual quality.

Modern websites, image optimization pipelines, content-management systems, browsers, and graphics applications use AVIF. Users commonly encounter .avif files after downloading images from newer websites or exporting from software such as GIMP, Photoshop, ImageMagick, or FFmpeg with the required AV1 and AVIF support.

What WEBP is

WEBP is an image format developed by Google and supported by current web browsers plus many desktop, mobile, and publishing applications. It supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, animation, and metadata.

Lossy WEBP can be smaller than JPEG at comparable visual quality, while lossless WEBP can reduce the size of some PNG files without changing pixel data. Its support is broad, but older applications and devices may still require JPEG or PNG.

How to convert AVIF to WEBP

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the AVIF-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or upload the .avif file.
3. Choose WEBP as the output format and set the available quality option. On a 0–100 lossy scale, start around 80–85, then inspect the image and file size.

Using ImageMagick

Install an ImageMagick build with AVIF decoding and WEBP encoding support. Confirm that both formats appear in magick identify -list format, then run:

Some ImageMagick packages lack AVIF support because they were built without compatible libheif, libavif, or WEBP libraries. Install a package with those delegates or use a converter that supports both formats.

Using FFmpeg

With an FFmpeg build that includes AVIF input support and the libwebp encoder, convert a still image with:

ffmpeg -i input.avif -c:v libwebp -q:v 75 output.webp

FFmpeg's -q:v scale is encoder-specific; lower values generally produce higher quality and larger files, so test several settings. Animated AVIF conversion requires checking the frame count, timing, metadata, and output playback because not every animation feature transfers to WEBP.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Lossy recompression: Converting a lossy AVIF to lossy WEBP can add another generation of artifacts. Keep the original AVIF and create alternate formats from it.
• Lossless output: Lossless WEBP preserves the decoded pixels, not information discarded when the source AVIF was encoded as lossy. It may also produce a larger file than lossy WEBP or the original AVIF.
• Transparency: Both formats support alpha channels, but the selected tool must preserve them. Test transparent images against their intended background for halos or color fringes.
• Color and HDR: ICC profiles, wide-gamut color, HDR information, and color metadata may be converted, discarded, or interpreted differently. Check the WEBP in the application that will display it.
• Metadata: EXIF, XMP, ICC profiles, and other metadata are not guaranteed to survive every conversion path. Verify metadata if it contains orientation, copyright, or location information.
• Dimensions: Keep the source pixel dimensions unless resizing is required. Compare visual detail, file size, transparency, and animation before replacing the AVIF.
