Web browsers, website upload forms, and many image editors do not open Hasselblad’s 3FR RAW files, while WEBP is widely supported and usually smaller than JPEG or PNG. Converting renders the camera data into a shareable image, but it also removes the original RAW editing flexibility.

What the 3FR format is

3FR is Hasselblad’s RAW format, used by many Hasselblad medium-format digital cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data along with exposure metadata, white-balance information, and camera-specific details.

You typically encounter 3FR files after copying images from a Hasselblad camera or memory card. Hasselblad Phocus, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, darktable, and RawTherapee can open supported 3FR files; compatibility depends on the camera model and the installed RAW-processing library.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a web-oriented raster image format supported by current browsers and many desktop applications. It can store lossy or lossless images, transparency, and metadata, although ordinary photographic exports generally use lossy compression.

WEBP is useful for websites, messaging, previews, and storage where a smaller file matters. Lossy WEBP commonly produces a smaller file than JPEG at comparable visual quality, while lossless WEBP preserves rendered pixels but may not be smaller than JPEG.

How to convert 3FR to WEBP

Using darktable

  1. Install darktable and import the .3fr file.
  2. Open the image in the darkroom, then set exposure, white balance, lens corrections, crop, and color profile as needed.
  3. Open the lighttable view, select the image, and choose Export.
  4. Set the export format to WebP, choose a quality value such as 85, select an output folder, and start the export.

darktable uses the RAW data to create the final rendered image before encoding it as WEBP. Exporting directly from a RAW processor is preferable to using a generic image converter because it provides control over demosaicing, exposure, white balance, and color management.

Using Hasselblad Phocus and ImageMagick

  1. Open the 3FR file in Hasselblad Phocus.
  2. Apply the required RAW adjustments and use File → Export to create a 16-bit TIFF.
  3. Convert the TIFF with ImageMagick:

magick input.tif -quality 85 output.webp

Replace input.tif and output.webp with the actual filenames. The TIFF intermediate preserves more rendered image information during handoff, but it can be much larger than the final WEBP.

Converting without installing software

You can convert the file for free on the 101convert.com website. Uploading a RAW photograph sends the original camera file to a third party, so use desktop software instead for confidential images or files containing sensitive metadata.

Quality and compatibility considerations

A WEBP file is a rendered image, not a RAW replacement. After conversion, changing exposure, recovering highlights, or correcting white balance is substantially more limited than working from the original 3FR, so archive the 3FR separately.

Use a quality setting around 80–90 for general web images. Choose lossless WEBP when pixel preservation matters, but expect larger files. Keep the output in sRGB for websites and broad application compatibility; wide-gamut profiles may be ignored by some browsers or viewers.

Some older applications cannot open WEBP even though modern browsers can. If the destination specifically requires JPEG, TIFF, or PNG, export that format instead of adding a WEBP conversion step.
