Hasselblad cameras save photographs as 3FR raw files, but many editors, websites, and image viewers require PNG instead. Converting produces a broadly compatible, lossless raster image for editing, publishing, or sharing, while the original raw file remains available for future processing.

What the 3FR format is

3FR is Hasselblad’s proprietary raw image format, used by several Hasselblad digital cameras and backs. It stores minimally processed sensor data rather than a finished photograph, along with exposure and camera metadata. You typically encounter 3FR files after copying images from a Hasselblad camera or importing them into a computer without converting them first.

Hasselblad Phocus is the manufacturer’s main application for opening and developing 3FR files. Applications based on LibRaw, including darktable and RawTherapee, may also support compatible 3FR models, but support depends on the camera and the installed raw-processing library.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format supported by web browsers, operating systems, graphics editors, and document applications. It preserves exact pixel values after export and supports transparency, although transparency is not normally relevant to a photograph converted from a camera raw file.

PNG is useful when an application rejects 3FR, when image data must not receive another lossy JPEG compression step, or when a rendered image is needed for web or software use. PNG is not a raw format: once exported, camera-level adjustments such as white balance and exposure recovery cannot be changed with the same flexibility.

How to actually convert 3FR to PNG

Using Hasselblad Phocus

1. Install and open Hasselblad Phocus, then import the .3FR file or open the folder containing it.
2. Adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, color, and cropping before export.
3. Select the image and choose File → Export or the application’s export command.
4. Choose PNG as the output format if it is available, select the output folder, and start the export.

Phocus applies the raw-processing settings and writes a rendered PNG; it does not convert the 3FR into an editable raw file.

Using darktable or RawTherapee

1. Open the 3FR file in darktable or RawTherapee and confirm that the preview is correctly decoded.
2. Make the required raw adjustments, including the correct camera profile, white balance, exposure, and color space.
3. Export or queue the image and select PNG as the output format. Use 16-bit output when the program offers it and the image will receive further editing.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

PNG preserves the exported pixels, but conversion quality depends primarily on the raw-development settings and the selected color profile. Embed an sRGB profile for general web and application compatibility; use a wider-gamut profile only when the destination software supports color management.

A 3FR file can contain more recoverable highlight and shadow information than the PNG after rendering. Keep the original 3FR and its processing settings if later exposure or white-balance changes may be needed.

PNG files are often much larger than JPEG files and are not guaranteed to be smaller than 3FR files. PNG is usually appropriate for lossless graphics and intermediate editing, while high-quality JPEG is often more efficient for ordinary photographic sharing.
