Convert CPT to PNG

A browser, office application, or non-Corel editor may not open a Corel PHOTO-PAINT image stored as CPT. Converting it to PNG provides a widely supported raster image and can retain transparency for web or document use.

What the CPT format is

CPT is the native bitmap format associated primarily with Corel PHOTO-PAINT, Corel's raster-image editor. It can contain pixel data, layers, masks, transparency, color information, editable text, and PHOTO-PAINT-specific effects. CPT files are common in Corel-based design archives and projects exchanged by Corel users.

CPT is proprietary rather than a general-purpose interchange format, so browsers and many non-Corel applications cannot open it. The .cpt extension can also be used by unrelated software, so a converter may fail if the file is not actually a PHOTO-PAINT image.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format supported by browsers, image viewers, office software, and most graphics editors. It preserves sharp edges and flat colors without JPEG artifacts and supports transparency through an alpha channel. PNG is suitable for logos, screenshots, interface graphics, illustrations, and images that need a transparent background.

PNG stores a rendered image, not the original editing structure. It does not retain CPT layers, editable text, masks, vector objects, adjustment settings, or PHOTO-PAINT effects as separate components. PNG files are often larger than JPEG files for photographs.

How to convert CPT to PNG

Using Corel PHOTO-PAINT

1. Open the CPT file in Corel PHOTO-PAINT with File → Open. Use a current or sufficiently recent version that supports the file's CPT variant.
2. Check the image dimensions, color mode, transparency, and visible layers. Hide or remove anything that should not appear in the final image.
3. Choose File → Export, select PNG from the format list, and enter a filename ending in .png. In versions that offer PNG through File → Save As, that command also works; Export leaves the original CPT unchanged.
4. Set the PNG options. Keep the existing pixel dimensions unless resizing is required, choose RGB or sRGB for normal screen use, and preserve the alpha channel when a transparent background is needed.
5. Open the exported file in another image viewer or editor and check its dimensions, transparency, colors, and visible content.

CorelDRAW may also be able to import a CPT image and export the result as PNG, but PHOTO-PAINT is the better choice when the file contains PHOTO-PAINT layers or effects.

Using an online converter

CloudConvert and Zamzar have offered CPT-to-PNG conversion, although supported formats and file-size limits can change. Upload the .cpt file, select PNG as the output, start the conversion, and download the result. Check the service's current format list before uploading.

Online conversion can flatten layers, discard unsupported effects, or reject files from newer PHOTO-PAINT versions. Do not upload confidential artwork, personal images, or proprietary designs unless the provider's retention and deletion terms are acceptable. If the service cannot identify the file, export it locally from Corel PHOTO-PAINT.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion renders the CPT document as one bitmap. Layer names, editable text, masks, vector content, adjustment settings, and application-specific effects cannot be independently edited in the PNG. Keep the original CPT as the master file.

PNG supports RGB and grayscale image data, not CMYK output. A CMYK CPT therefore has to be converted to RGB, and colors may change depending on the source profile and export settings. Use an embedded sRGB profile for typical web or screen delivery, and verify the result in the application that will use it. PNG preserves pixel dimensions, but resolution or DPI metadata may not be retained consistently by every converter.
