Convert AFDESIGN to PNG

PNG is required when an AFDESIGN document must be displayed by a browser, messaging app, office program, or device that does not support Affinity Designer files. Exporting also creates a fixed, shareable raster image while preserving transparency and avoiding the need to distribute an editable source document.

What the AFDESIGN format is

.afdesign is the native document format of Serif's Affinity Designer, used by graphic designers and illustrators. It can store editable vector objects, text, layers, artboards, effects, document settings, and embedded or linked image resources. An AFDESIGN file is an editable project, not a standard image; Affinity Designer is the most reliable application for opening and rendering it.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office applications, and most image viewers. It uses lossless compression and can include an alpha channel for transparent areas, making it suitable for logos, interface graphics, illustrations, and screenshots. PNG does not retain editable layers, vector paths, text objects, artboards, or Affinity-specific effects.

How to export an AFDESIGN file as PNG

Using Affinity Designer

1. Open the file in Affinity Designer and check that fonts, linked images, layer visibility, clipping, blend modes, and effects render correctly.
2. Choose File → Export.
3. Select PNG as the format.
4. Choose the export area, such as the whole document, an artboard, a selected object, or the current selection, depending on the document and Affinity Designer version.
5. Set the output pixel dimensions or scaling. For web use, enter the final required pixel dimensions or export at a suitable scale such as 2× for high-density displays. A 300 DPI setting supplies print metadata, but the pixel dimensions determine the actual raster detail.
6. For a transparent result, enable the document's transparent background and select a PNG mode that supports an alpha channel. Do not add a matte or background color unless the PNG should have a fixed background.
7. Click Export, select a destination, name the file, for example logo.png, and save it.

For several artboards or repeated assets, use File → Export Persona to create slices and export multiple PNG files with consistent dimensions. Inspect the result at 100% size before delivery.

Using an online converter

Some conversion services, including CloudConvert or Zamzar, may list AFDESIGN support, but availability and rendering quality can change. Confirm that the service currently accepts the specific .afdesign file before uploading it; many general converters do not support Affinity's native format directly. Upload only non-confidential files, because online conversion sends the source document to a third-party server.

When an online service cannot open the file or produces incorrect fonts, effects, artboards, or transparency, export it locally with Affinity Designer. There is no dependable general-purpose alternative that preserves every Affinity Designer feature.

Quality and compatibility limits

Exporting rasterizes the design at the selected pixel size. Enlarging the PNG later can soften text, curves, and thin strokes, so set the final dimensions during export. Missing fonts, unavailable linked files, live filters, blend modes, clipping, and unsupported effects can change the appearance; compare the PNG with the original before distribution.

Transparency is retained only when the document and selected PNG export settings permit an alpha channel. Some viewers display transparent pixels as black, white, or a checkerboard pattern even though the PNG is valid. If the recipient requires a solid background, add that background in Affinity Designer and export it as part of the image.
